“If you have sensitive skin or are prone to rosacea (a facial skin disease characterized by reddish skin accompanied by acne-like spots) and want to seek physical exfoliation, I recommend products with fine grains,” says Garshick.

“Or look for a powder-based scrub made from clay or bamboo extract,” he says.

2. Exfoliation Tips for Sensitive Skin

Having a sensitive skin type makes choosing products difficult skincare. Meanwhile, sensitive skin is characterized by redness, a burning sensation, and is more susceptible to certain ingredients.

Garshick said that the right type of exfoliation for those with sensitive skin is chemical exfoliation. This is because chemical exfoliants tend to have formulas that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, or beta-hydroxy acids such as salicylic acid.

“Alpha-hydroxy acid gently removes dead skin cells on the surface, while beta-hydroxy acid dissolves in oil and penetrates deeper into pores to help reduce acne,” explains Garshick.

“Both types of acid work to brighten the skin, improve texture, and even out overall skin tone,” he continued.

3. Exfoliation Tips for Acne-Prone Skin

Similar to sensitive skin types, people with acne-prone skin are sometimes hesitant to exfoliate their skin.

Garshick said that people with acne-prone skin can consider chemical exfoliation containing salicylic acid which can clean skin pores.

“Regardless of the exfoliation method used, it is important to limit exfoliation to once or twice a week,” emphasizes Garshick.

“Exfoliating too frequently or too aggressively can make your skin look red or inflamed and cause tension, burning, or stinging,” she continues.
