Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Mira Murati’s name emerged shortly after Sam Altman’s dismissal from the CEO position at OpenAI. The 34 year old woman will replace Altman in the top position at the company which operates in the field of Artificial Intelligence technology.
Murati is a mechanical engineer and worked at Tesla before joining OpenAI. One of his roles was the development of Model X and Leap Motion, a startup developing a computing system for tracking hand and finger movements.
It was his work at Tesla that exposed him to AI technology. That’s also what has led him to work at OpenAI since 2018. But most of his work is behind the scenes at the company.
When Murati joined, OpenAI was still a non-profit organization. The goal is to ensure AI can be useful for all humans.
“I think if you build intelligence, it is the core unit in the universe that influences everything. What else can be done more inspiring than increasing the collective intelligence of humanity,” he said last August.
Since last year, he has been working as CTO. Namely overseeing the development and delivery of products such as ChatGPT and Dall-E, quoted from NYTimes, Saturday (18/11/2023).
Murati also works as the company’s chief operating officer. His job is to ensure that engineers develop ChatGPT according to schedule.
Cooperation between OpenAI and Microsoft is also his job. Murati handles relations between two companies, including investors and partners.
The popularity of ChatGPT and Dall-E made him appear in front of the public. On The Daily Show last year, he said that AI needs to be present in society but in a responsible way.
Murati was appointed as interim CEO of OpenAI last Friday. The same day, Altman was fired by the company’s board of directors on the grounds of honest communication.
According to the company, Murati has unique skills. OpenAI also ensured that the company’s new boss would provide a smooth transition during the search for a permanent CEO.
