Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesia and Southeast Asian countries are exploring increasing cooperation with the United States (US) in the field of security in the Indo-Pacific region.
This emerged when the Indonesian Minister of Defense (Menhan) Prabowo Subianto and the ASEAN Defense Ministers held a meeting with the United States Minister of Defense, Lloyd J. Austin III at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Wednesday (15/11/2023).
This meeting is a series of events at the 17th ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Informal Meeting, where this year Indonesia acted as host.
Prabowo called this meeting a form of commitment to the strategic partnership that has existed between ASEAN countries and the US.
“A partnership built on trust, shared values and commitment to peace, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region,” he said, in an official statement, Thursday (16/11/2023).
According to him, every country also has an obligation to ensure the creation of security stability in the region and respect their respective national interests. Therefore, the meeting between ASEAN and the US is considered a valuable opportunity to increase cooperation and mutual understanding regarding the currently developing security landscape in the region.
“The challenges we are currently facing are diverse and complex. Starting from traditional threats to emerging non-traditional threats, such as cyber threats; transnational crime; and humanitarian crises,” he said.
To respond to these challenges, according to Prabowo, ASEAN and its dialogue partners, including the US, must continue to work together and promote the creation of peace and security in the region.
“This is an opportunity to explore the potential for cooperation in other fields, which can also increase the capacity of ASEAN countries in facing growing threats in the Indo-Pacific region,” concluded Prabowo.
