Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI) is one of the players in the nickel industry smelting in Indonesia realizes the urgency to prioritize aspects of worker protection for the sake of collective safety.
In its operations in North Morowali Regency, industrial company smelters this establishes inspection and testing as a top priority. All aspects of occupational safety, including the environment, occupational health, as well as the use of heavy equipment and operational processes, are carefully checked.
The aim is to ensure optimal protection for workers in accordance with work safety regulations that apply at PT GNI and throughout Indonesia. Moreover, PT GNI in carrying out the nickel ore smelting process, adopts technology Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) with 25 production lines which are predicted to be able to produce up to 2 million units Nickel Pig Iron (NPI) every year.
With tens of thousands of employees involved and operations involving high equipment and temperatures, the company’s top priority is maintaining employee security and safety. This priority makes PT GNI committed to creating a safe and comfortable work environment as the main pillar.
The work safety regulations implemented by PT GNI are in line with the provisions of the Ministry of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia. Referring to the Minister of Manpower Regulation no. Per.04/men/1987, companies with 100 or more employees, or even if there are less than 100 people but involve high-risk materials, processes or installations, are required to form an Occupational Safety and Health Advisory Committee (P2K3).
The function of P2K3 is to form collaboration between employers and workers to work on occupational safety and health (K3) effectively.
“The existence of P2K3 with its members representing employers and workers has an important role, not only for the interests of the company, but also for employees. Therefore, this is a real commitment from PT GNI,” wrote PT GNI in an official statement, quoted Friday (10 /11/2023).
P2K3’s duties and functions include collecting and analyzing data related to K3 in the company, providing employees with an understanding of job risks and hazards, evaluating the work environment, developing an K3 risk control system, and so on.
The role of P2K3 is very strategic in formulating, implementing and supervising work safety procedures and K3 regulations at PT GNI, especially in work environments that have high risks such as smelters nickel.
Apart from the internal approach, PT GNI also collaborates with external parties to ensure the implementation of work safety procedures. For example, PT GNI collaborates with the Ministry of Manpower to strengthen K3 aspects through the resulting work regulations. This commitment is reflected in PT GNI’s Occupational Safety and Health (K3) Commitment and Pledge.
Based on reports from the Ministry of Manpower, PT GNI is actively requesting guidance and coordination to improve K3 standards in factories. Concrete steps were taken, including preparation timeline to comply with labor norms. The involvement of supervisory authorities also continues to ensure the implementation of work safety standards.
Apart from that, PT GNI also routinely carries out education and training programs regarding K3 to strengthen workers’ understanding of existing procedures and regulations.
As a concrete step, the company held Basic Education and Training (diklatsar) on Work Accident Rescue and Handling. In collaboration with the Palu City National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), this training teaches employees about emergency response and the use of emergency response facilities.
