Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The monkey pox disease that caused concern in 2022 has reappeared. This time, the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) discovered a new case of monkeypox caused by the monkeypox virus in DKI Jakarta. Thus, the total number of monkeypox cases in Indonesia is three patients.
“Three [orang] confirmed [terjangkit cacar monyet],” said Head of the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s Communications and Public Services Bureau, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, to CNBC Indonesia, Friday (20/10/2023).
“[Temuan kasus ketiga] in Jakarta too,” added Dr. Nadia.
Dr. Nadia said that the third case of monkey pox patient was confirmed based on laboratory results on Thursday (19/10/2023). Currently, the Ministry of Health is conducting a contact examination of the third case, including the patient’s travel history.
Please note, monkey pox is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. Initially, monkey pox was an endemic disease in tropical rainforest areas in central and west Africa, but now it has spread so widely that it is no longer categorized as an endemic disease.
Symptoms of monkey pox
Meanwhile, the symptoms experienced by this third monkey pox patient were fever and lesions, like smallpox.
In detail, Dr. Nadia stated that the patient in the second case of monkey pox in Jakarta was a 26 year old man, while the patient in the third case was a 28 year old man.
Previously, the DKI Jakarta Health Service (Dinkes) had discovered two cases of monkey pox in August 2022 and October 12 2023. Until now, the first monkey pox patient discovered in August 2022 has not recovered and is still being treated.
In order to avoid the spread of monkey pox cases, Dr. Nadia emphasized the public not to have risky sex and immediately visit a health facility (faskes) if symptoms are found.
“Don’t engage in risky sexual behavior. If you have to, use protection and don’t change partners,” advised Dr. Nadia. “If there are symptoms of smallpox lesions, immediately go to the health facility and do an examination,” she concluded.
Following are the general symptoms of monkey pox according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
