International Foreign Media Highlights Dynasty in the Indonesian Presidential Election, Call This News – 1 hour ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Foreign media continues to highlight the dynamics in the upcoming 2024 Indonesian presidential election (Pilpres). One of them is the nomination of President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as vice presidential candidate (cawapres) from Prabowo Subianto.

Several media reported about what happened in the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) two weeks ago which set the threshold for presidential election participants to be at least 40 years old or have been or are currently regional heads. This then allowed Gibran, who is 36 years old, to take part in the contest.

British media, The Economistin his article entitled “Jokowi Is Building A Political Dynasty”, revealed that the number one person in the Republic of Indonesia had truly built a political dynasty. The media even mentioned indications of the role of the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Anwar Usman, who is Jokowi’s brother-in-law.

“Opposition groups and civil society condemned the court’s decision. It states that Article 17 of the Judicial Power Law prohibits constitutional court judges from trying cases that impact their families or themselves,” wrote the media, quoted Monday (30/10/2023) .

“Jokowi, who is prohibited by the constitution from running for a third term, has not publicly supported any candidate. But Gibran’s election shows that he is behind Prabowo,” he added.

“The survey shows that no candidate was able to win more than half of the votes in the first round of elections in February, which means the second round of elections will continue in June,” he explained again.

Economist also said how the presidential election scenario would play out between Prabowo-Gibran and their competitors, Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD and Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar. It is believed that Anies will be eliminated in the first round, leaving Prabowo vs Ganjar in the second round.

“If Anies is eliminated at that time, most of his Muslim supporters are expected to vote for Prabowo, potentially handing him victory,” he wrote.

“This former general who was once the president’s rival said he would continue Jokowi’s policies. That makes political sense,” he explained The Economist Again.

“Despite the decline in democracy he has experienced, Jokowi’s signature steps, including infrastructure development, are very popular,” the news agency added.

Reports related to “dynasties” in the Indonesian presidential election were also widely reported in the Dutch media. Newspaper De Volkskrant said it was very likely that a new dynasty would emerge in Indonesian politics.

“In a country with many political clans, it seems that a new political dynasty will be born. This is worrying news for the quality of public services,” the media reported.

Other Dutch media, NRC, also said that Gibran’s candidacy had been anticipated. The media reported that this raised concerns in society that autocracy could arise.

“Jokowi cannot be re-elected in the presidential election next February because he has already served two terms. However, this reduction in age means that his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who has just turned 36, has the right to run for vice president,” he added.
