International Biden Strongly Warns Netanyahu, Are US-Israel Relations Tensed? News – 49 minutes ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – United States (US) President Joe Biden pressured Israel to protect civilians in Gaza and pushed for an immediate increase in humanitarian aid in the enclave.

To Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu by telephone on Sunday (29/10/2023), Biden said Israel has the right to defend itself and must do so in a way that is consistent with international law regarding the protection of civilians.

According to a statement from the White House, Biden and Netanyahu discussed efforts to protect more than 200 hostages taken by Hamas in a surprise attack on Israel on October 7.

The White House said Biden also “underscored the need to immediately and significantly increase the flow of humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of civilians in Gaza,” as supplies in the besieged territory dwindle.

With the death toll in the Gaza Strip in the thousands and rising, the Biden administration is under pressure to make clear its support for Israel does not mean blanket support for everything its allies do in the region.

In a television interview on Sunday morning, Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said Israel had a responsibility to protect the lives of innocent people in Gaza.

Sullivan said Washington asked Israel tough questions, including on issues surrounding humanitarian aid, distinguishing between terrorists and innocent civilians and about how Israel thinks about its military operations.

“What we believe is that every hour, every day of this military operation, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), the Israeli government must take every means available to them to distinguish between Hamas terrorists who are legitimate military targets and civilians who are targeted their legitimate military. no,” he was quoted as saying Reuters.

Sullivan also said Netanyahu had a responsibility to “control” extremist Jewish settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. “It is completely unacceptable for violence by extremist settlers against innocent people in the West Bank,” he said.

Biden is also said to be facing pressure from within his Democratic Party to call for an Israeli ceasefire in Gaza.
