Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – PT Pertamina (Persero) and Garuda Indonesia today carried out their first commercial flight using environmentally friendly fuel, Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) or Bioavtur.

The Sustainable Aviation Fuel Ceremonial Flight was carried out at Terminal 3 of Soekarno – Hatta International Airport with destination Adi Soemarmo Airport (Surakarta), and returned to Jakarta.

Director of Logistics and Infrastructure at Pertamina, Alfian Nasution, said that this environmentally friendly aviation fuel is proof of the contribution of BUMN collaboration to efforts to reduce emissions and support the achievement of the Net Zero Emission target. Moreover, Pertamina is committed to supporting the achievement of the Indonesian Government’s NZE target by developing a roadmap for decarbonization assets and green business development, including SAF for the aviation sector.

“This special flight will be a historical milestone in the sustainable aviation industry. People will also experience new experiences, experience the use of renewable energy and contribute directly to reducing emissions,” explained Alfian in an official statement, Friday (27/10/2023).

As is known, Pertamina SAF’s journey has been initiated since 2010 through Pertamina’s Research & Technology Innovation, through product and catalyst development research.

In 2021, PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional succeeded in producing SAF J2.4 at Refinery Unit IV Cilacap with Co-Processing technology from the raw material Refined Bleached Deodorized Palm Kernel Oil (RBDPKO), or palm kernel oil that has undergone bleaching and removal processes. free and odorous fatty acids, with a capacity of 1,350 kilo liters (KL) per day.

Through collaboration with relevant stakeholders, the SAF product then went through a series of trials on aircraft engines and units. The series of tests started from the cell test at the Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF), ground run, flight test on the CN-235 military aircraft belonging to PT Dirgantara Indonesia, to the flight test of a commercial aircraft belonging to Garuda Indonesia on October 4 2023 on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. NG belongs to PT Garuda Indonesia.

Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) products will later be marketed and distributed through the subholding PT Pertamina Patra Niaga. The results of a series of tests that have been carried out show that the performance of SAF J2.4 is of the same quality as conventional aviation fuel.

This is a response to Pertamina’s commitment to providing environmentally friendly aviation fuel, and has been used for commercial flights carried out today.

“We appreciate the stakeholders who have contributed to the implementation of the SAF product testing series so far, namely the Director General of EBTKE and the ITB research team as coordinators, BPDPKS as sponsor of the series of activities, PT Garuda Indonesia as the aircraft unit provider, as well as other parties involved in all testing stage. Today’s joy flight is one of the most important milestones in the implementation of SAF in Indonesia in the future. Therefore, we hope that all activities can be carried out smoothly and also provide benefits for all parties and become concrete evidence of our commitment to achieve NZE in 2060 or faster,” said Alfian.

Garuda Indonesia President Director Irfan Setiadi said that today his party had carried out the first commercial flight with several passengers from Soekarno Hatta to Adi Soemarmo.

“We have succeeded in using biofuel for commercial flights. This shows our seriousness, so of course we hope that Garuda Indonesia is perceived as a company that prioritizes sustainability and the future of our children and grandchildren,” explained Irfan.

For your information, the development of SAF is one of Pertamina’s efforts in the energy transition, as well as achieving the 2060 Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by continuing to encourage programs that have a direct impact on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). All of these efforts are in line with the implementation of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) in all Pertamina business lines and operations.
