Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The phenomenon of online gambling in Indonesia continues to be of concern to the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo). During the period July to October, Kominfo has blocked 400 thousand online gambling content spread across the digital realm.
The Directorate General of Informatics Applications (Ditjen Aptika) Kominfo has also created a special task force that works 24 hours with three shifts to eradicate online gambling sites. He said this task force had collaborated with the police.
In terms of fund flow, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) has the authority to block accounts related to online gambling. However, a special task force has not yet been created at the OJK for this matter.
This was conveyed by the Chief Executive of Financial Services Business Conduct, Education and Consumer Protection, Friderica Widyasari Dewi at the press conference for the October 2023 Board of Commissioners Meeting, Monday (30/10/2023).
“Regarding online gambling, it is not included in the task force, but general crimes and the ITE Law are in the realm of Kominfo. But the OJK supports this effort and has the authority to block it,” he said.
“OJK supports the closure of this online gambling account,” he added.
Previously, Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Nezar Patria said that eradicating online gambling needed help from all parties. Regarding online gambling sites, Nezar invites the public to take an active role.
The reason is, every time there is action, such as blocking, a new website or site will appear as a replacement.
“So this is really a huge amount of work and as we know one more takedown appears, but we never stop monitoring and taking firm action for online gambling,” said Nezar some time ago.
Therefore, he also asked the public to be actively involved in reporting the existence of online gambling sites, as well as parties who openly promote them. This includes cases of online gambling sites sponsoring community activities.
Previously, the Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi, had estimated that public losses due to online gambling reached IDR 2.2 trillion for one site alone. That way, annually it could reach IDR 27 trillion.
