Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Israeli attacks continue to occur in Gaza. The attack was launched in revenge for the attack by the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, on its territory on October 7.
So far, Israel’s attacks on Gaza have killed 11,500 people and this figure is expected to continue to rise. On the other hand, it is known that on October 7, around 1,200 Israeli citizens were killed due to Hamas attacks.
Most recently, Israel invaded Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza under the pretext of eliminating Hamas. This action received worldwide criticism, which said that hospitals should be safe from attacks during war.
The following are the dynamics of the Israel-Hamas war as collected by CNBC Indonesia from various sources, Friday (17/11/2023):
1. Saudi Arabia opens its voice
Saudi Arabia opens its voice regarding the Israeli military raid on Al Shifa Hospital (RS) in Gaza, Palestine. This was expressed in the official X account, previously Twitter, of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thursday (16/11/2023).
In its statement, Saudi said it strongly condemned the Israeli occupation forces’ attack on Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza and the bombing around the Jordan Field Hospital.
“The Kingdom emphasizes the need to activate international accountability mechanisms regarding ongoing violations and brutal and inhumane practices carried out by Israeli occupation forces, against children, women, civilians, health facilities and aid teams,” the ministry told X.
Previously, Israeli troops directly attacked Al-Shifa Hospital on Wednesday. Tel Aviv said the attack was carried out against members of the Hamas militia hiding there.
2. US Warns Israel
United States (US) President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu that a two-state solution was the only answer to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“I have explained to Israel that I think it would be a big mistake if they occupied Gaza,” Biden said on Wednesday (15/11/2023), as quoted Reuters.
Biden told reporters he was doing everything in his power to free hostages held by the Hamas militant group in Gaza, but that did not mean sending in the US military.
“What I mean is, I did everything in my power to get you out. I came to help you, get you out. I didn’t mean to send the military there. … I’m not talking about the military,” Biden said.
Biden said he was continuing to work on the issue and would not stop until the hostages, including a three-year-old American child, were freed.
Biden said Hamas committed war crimes by placing its military base under a hospital, repeating a statement a White House spokesman made on Tuesday, and he believed US intelligence supported those “facts.”
3. UN Security Council Approves Resolution on Gaza
The UN Security Council (SC) has passed a resolution calling for an “urgent and extended humanitarian pause and corridor across the Gaza Strip” to allow aid deliveries and medical evacuations.
Launch Al Jazeerathe UNSC finally passed the resolution proposed by Malta after four failed attempts to respond to the Israel-Hamas war.
Ambassador Vanessa Frazier said the resolution also calls for a “corridor across the Gaza Strip for several days” to protect civilians, especially children. They also asked for the unconditional release of prisoners held in Gaza.
This decision was adopted with 12 votes in favor, zero against and three abstentions. Russia, the US and the UK were the countries that abstained.
4. Israel Regarding the UNSC
Israel has opened its voice on the UN Security Council (DK) resolution calling for a pause and an urgent humanitarian corridor in Gaza to allow the delivery of aid and medical evacuation. This opinion was conveyed by Gilad Erdan, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Wednesday (16/11/2023).
In his view, he emphasized that Israel acted in accordance with international law in Gaza. He also said that the humanitarian pause would not happen.
“It is unfortunate that the council still cannot condemn or even mention the massacre that Hamas carried out on (October 7) and led to the war in Gaza,” he wrote in X.
“This is shameful,” he added, saying that Hamas’ strategy was to “deliberately worsen the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and increase the number of Palestinian casualties in order to activate the UN and the Security Council in an effort to stop Israel.”
Previously, the UNSC resolution regarding the humanitarian pause in Gaza was submitted by Malta after four failed attempts to respond to the Israel-Hamas war. Ambassador Vanessa Frazier said the resolution also calls for a “corridor across the Gaza Strip for several days” to protect civilians, especially children.
5. Development of Israel-Hamas Negotiations
Qatari mediators on Wednesday (11/15/2023) attempted to negotiate a deal between Hamas and Israel that includes the release of around 50 civilian hostages from Gaza in exchange for a three-day ceasefire.
An official familiar with the negotiations said the agreement was being discussed and coordinated with the United States (US).
The deal will also see Israel free a number of Palestinian women and children from Israeli prisons and increase the amount of humanitarian aid allowed into Gaza.
This would mark the largest release of hostages held by Hamas since the Palestinian militant group overran the Gaza border, attacking parts of Israel and taking hostages into the enclave.
“Hamas has agreed to the outline of this deal, but Israel has not and is still negotiating the details,” the official said, as reported by Reuters.
It is not known how many Palestinian women and children Israel will release from prison as part of the agreement under discussion.
The scope of the Qatari-led talks has changed significantly in recent weeks, but in fact they are now focused on the release of 50 civilian prisoners in exchange for a three-day ceasefire.
The wealthy Gulf state of Qatar has direct lines of communication with Hamas and Israel. Previously, they had helped mediate a ceasefire between the two. Such a deal would require Hamas to hand over a complete list of the remaining living civilian hostages being held in Gaza.
“A more complete release of all the hostages is not currently being discussed,” the official said.
6. Israeli PM wants to be overthrown
The Israeli government is increasingly divided as the war in Gaza heats up. The fate of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to be overthrown.
Israeli ministers and lawmakers from the ruling Likud party are discussing plans to oust Netanyahu.
Israeli Media, Channel 13 Newsreported that the plan includes recruiting 61 lawmakers to pass a vote of no confidence in Netanyahu’s government and to form a new government without holding elections.
Channel 13as quoted from Anadolu AgencyThursday (16/11/2023), adding that Likud Party lawmakers are worried that if Netanyahu continues to lead the party and then causes defeat in the next election, most of these lawmakers will not be part of the Israeli political system.
He added that after the end of the military ground operation in Gaza, which so far shows no signs of being completed, lawmakers will continue with their plans to hold a parliamentary session to oust Netanyahu.
To assuage opposition fears, the Likud figure proposed to lead the government after Netanyahu reportedly will not run in the next election.
However, the media reported that the plan’s chances of success were small because only 10 MPs from the Likud Party supported the plan. According to Israeli law, at least 15 members of parliament from the Likud Party are needed to carry it out.
7. Israeli findings at Al-Shifa Hospital
Israel said its soldiers had discovered what the army called “military equipment used by Hamas” in a raid on Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.
Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the military operation at the hospital was “still ongoing and will take time.”
Doctors and health officials in the Hamas-controlled enclave have consistently rejected accusations that the hospital is the location of a command center.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said soldiers discovered a room in the hospital where they found, “technological assets, along with military and combat equipment used by Hamas.”
“In other departments of the hospital, soldiers discovered an operational command center and technological assets belonging to Hamas,” the statement continued, indicating, “that the terrorist organization is using the hospital for terrorist purposes.”
8. Conflict in the West Bank
Raids and clashes are still ongoing in Al Mughayyir, east of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. Raids are still ongoing today.
Dozens of Palestinians have been detained, and witnesses say Israeli forces have turned the area into a kind of military base, with soldiers seen raising Israeli flags over Palestinian homes.
Overnight, there were reports that 60 Palestinians were detained across the occupied West Bank, and early this morning Israeli forces engaged in armed clashes with Palestinian fighters in the Faraa refugee camp.
Near Jenin, two houses were surveyed, namely the homes of Palestinians who were detained in August and remain in Israeli custody. Every time Israeli troops survey a house, it is a prelude to a raid.
9. Shooting breaks out in Jerusalem
Shooting occurred at a checkpoint in Jerusalem, West Bank, Thursday (16/11/2023). Israel’s national emergency service said four people were being treated for gunshot wounds, including a 20-year-old man who was in “very serious condition.”
While there were no details regarding the exact location of the attack, a video shared by Magen David Adom on social media showed an ambulance and police officers standing next to a checkpoint. Israeli police said three people had been neutralized following the incident
“The attacker arrived in a suspicious vehicle, and opened fire on our troops,” he added.
10. Israel Raids the House of a Hamas Leader
The Israeli army said it attacked the home of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza, which is currently outside the territory. It was unclear whether anyone was in the building when the attack occurred.
This is the second time Haniyeh’s property has been vandalized. On November 4, Al Aqsa Radio reported that Israeli drones fired missiles at Haniyeh’s house.
Haniyeh has been outside the Gaza Strip since 2019. He currently lives between Turkey and Qatar.
