Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The technology world is in an uproar because OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was suddenly fired from the company he founded. This news is surprising, because Altman is an important figure in the technology industry after launching the AI-generative service ChatGPT.
According to inside sources, OpenAI’s board of directors immediately approached the Google ecosystem after firing Altman. They plan to merge with Anthropic, a rival startup in the AI sector funded by Google and Amazon, quoted from ReutersTuesday (21/11/2023).
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused to comment on the circulating issues. OpenAI also declined to confirm.
For information, the founders of Anthropic were previously c-level employees at OpenAI until 2020. At that time, they broke up because they did not agree on how to ensure AI development was safe for humanity.
There were several events that occurred after Altman’s dismissal. The board of directors appointed OpenAI CTO Mira Murati as interim CEO, before replacing her again with Twitch co-founder Emmeth Shear.
Meanwhile, Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, who was also fired by the board, joined Microsoft. This was announced directly by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella via his personal X account.
Furthermore, this week, more than 700 OpenAI employees threatened to resign en masse, aka exodus, if the board of directors did not return Altman to the company.
