Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The owner of Foxconn, an iPhone factory from Taiwan, wants to run for president. Not long after his statement, the iPhone factory located in China was raided because it was the target of a tax audit.
Several Foxconn branches are suspected of violating applicable laws and regulations in China.
Foxconn has been an Apple partner for many years. This manufacturer supplies the most iPhones throughout the world.
China’s natural resources department also carried out direct inspections of Foxconn facilities to look at land use in Henan and Hubei provinces.
However, it was not explained further when the Chinese government’s investigation period into Foxconn facilities took place.
“Our basic operational principle throughout the world is to comply with applicable laws,” said Foxconn in its official statement, quoted by Reuters, Friday (27/10/2023).
Foxconn did not provide further details regarding the alleged violations. The Taiwanese giant only ensured that it would continue to coordinate with related parties.
Deputy Dean at the Taiwan Research Institute of Xiamen University, Zhang Wensheng, said land use audits are a normal procedure carried out on companies suspected of violating regulations.
“Foxconn branches must cooperate with audits and investigations carried out by the local government. If they are proven to have violated the rules, they must admit it and bear the penalties,” he said.
Foxconn founder wants to be president
The raid on the iPhone factory occurred not long after news that Foxconn founder Terry Gou was running for President of Taiwan. Last August he revealed his promises if he could sit in the chair of the number 1 person in the country.
Some of his promises focused on Taiwan’s economy, one of which promised that its economy could be more successful than Singapore. Although, there are also political issues, including the peace agreement with China.
Specifically regarding China, he is considered to know quite well how to respond to the Bamboo Curtain country. This is because Foxconn has a lot of investment in China, namely Apple production factory facilities.
Terry Gou’s name emerged when the presidential candidate from the ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was considered to be in a strong position. However, other candidates were considered less competitive.
Apparently as a way to increase votes, Guo asked candidates outside the DPP to unite. Even if possible support him for the presidency.
For your information, this election can be followed by candidates who get the most votes. So it took Guo less than half a year to collect votes to be able to run.
Taiwan’s presidential election will take place in January 2024. Guo needs 290 thousand signatures to become an independent candidate and build a coalition of supporters.
