Usually, headaches can appear suddenly, without a clear cause, and subside quickly. However, the symptoms can disappear quickly, making many people underestimate headaches.
In fact, there are several types of headache symptoms that should not be underestimated because they can be a sign of serious illness.
Neurologist, Dr. Istiana Sari, said that there are two types of headaches that humans generally experience, namely primary headaches and secondary headaches.
“Primary headaches are caused by bad daily behavior, such as lack of sleep, late eating which causes migraines, headaches clustersand tension headaches,” said Dr. Istiana, quoted on Tuesday (14/11/2023).
Meanwhile, he said that secondary headaches generally occur due to certain diseases, such as acute sinusitis, toothache, ear infections, head injuries, hypertension, brain tumors, strokesto brain blood vessel disorders.
“Headache is a complaint that is often experienced by everyone and is usually caused by muscle disorders around the head, blood vessel disorders,” explained Dr. Istiana, quoted Tuesday (14/11/2023).
“Sudden headaches can be caused by stroke, sinusitis infection, pharyngitis (throat inflammation) and otitis (ear inflammation),” he added.
Headache symptoms to watch out for:
1. Sudden and excruciating headache
According to Dr. Istiana, there are a number of signs of headaches that need to be watched out for and treated further, such as headaches accompanied by vision problems, vomiting, changes in cognitive function, confusion, stiff neck, and even loss of consciousness.
Dr. Istiana said that sudden and very excruciating headaches should not be considered trivial and should be seen by a doctor immediately. Because these symptoms can indicate a ruptured blood vessel in the brain, which is generally experienced by sufferers strokes.
2. Headaches, Fever and Neck Pain
If you experience headaches as well as fever and stiffness in the nape of the neck, Dr. Istiana appealed to see a doctor immediately. According to him, these three symptoms could be signs of inflammation of the brain or encephalitis or inflammation of the lining of the brain or meningitis.
For the record, if you experience a severe headache, immediately consult a neurologist for further evaluation. Generally, the doctor will carry out a physical examination and supporting examinations, such as blood tests, CT scans, MRI, and Electroencephalography (EEG) if necessary to determine the cause of headaches.
