Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Although they cannot be avoided, wrinkles on the face are one of the scourges of human skin. Therefore, it is not surprising that many people are always looking for ways to delay or avoid lots of wrinkles on the face.
Apart from the age factor, the cause of wrinkles on the face can also be influenced by lifestyle, such as smoking habits, rarely or never using sunscreen (sunscreen), to sleeping position.
Published studies Aesthetic Surgery Journal in 2016 revealed that there are several sleeping positions that should be avoided to delay the appearance of excess wrinkles on the face. This is because a number of sleeping positions actually provide mechanical pressure, causing skin distortion.
“The concept of sleep wrinkles is not new. Experts say that sleep wrinkles occur due to sleeping position and condensation of SMAS (a layer of tissue under the skin between the subcutaneous layer and muscles),” wrote the study researchers. Sleep Wrinkles: Facial Aging and Facial Distortion During Sleep, quoted Tuesday (7/11/2023).
Sleeping positions that cause wrinkles on the face
Based on observations of research participants who slept on transparent polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pillows, the researchers found that sleeping on their side or stomach caused facial tissue to be exposed to mechanical forces of friction, pressure and pulling, resulting in distortion of the face.
“Sleep-induced facial wrinkles form as a result of the distortion that occurs. Wrinkles tend to worsen over time due to repeated cycles, thinning of the skin, and reduced skin elasticity with age,” explained lead author, Dr. Goesel Anson.
In order to avoid wrinkles on the face due to sleeping position, Dr. Anson advises every individual to always try to sleep on their back. This is because sleeping on your back does not result in your face being rubbed, pressed or pulled on the surface of the bed.
“One way to reduce wrinkles during sleep is to reduce facial distortion during sleep. “Therefore, the most ideal position for sleeping is on your back,” emphasized Dr. Anson.
“Currently, there are several special pillows that can help the body sleep on its back,” he said.
Although most studies have found the influence of sleep position on facial wrinkles, the researchers recommend further research to explore the mechanisms of sleep wrinkle development.
Apart from changing sleeping positions, each individual is also advised to use it regularly sunscreenstop smoking, meet the body’s nutritional needs, and maximize skin care.
“Even though plastic surgeons also advise their patients to avoid sleeping on their side and stomach, it is very difficult to consciously change their sleep patterns,” the study report said.
“Therefore, non-invasive aesthetic treatments that increase collagen production can reduce wrinkles during sleep,” the report continues.
