Tokopedia Protects IPR of Book Writers Through the Tech Literature Library Festival – 3 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Tokopedia consistently makes efforts to strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) throughout the Tokopedia ecosystem and in Indonesia. Tokopedia has proven this commitment through collaboration with the government, writers, publishers and associations in launching the Pustaka Sastra Festival on Wednesday (25/10).

Vice President of Physical Goods Tokopedia, David Kartono said, the Pustaka Sastra Festival aims to strengthen the protection of authors’ IPR and book copyright, as well as eradicate pirated books in Indonesia, especially on the Tokopedia platform.

According to the Indonesian Publishers Association (Ikapi), digitalization is a factor that actually increases opportunities for selling pirated books. The Ikapi survey in 2021 showed that around 75% of publishers found that their published books were being pirated and sold on the marketplace. Losses resulting from book piracy are estimated at hundreds of billions of rupiah.

For this reason, the Pustaka Sastra Festival comes with various programs, starting from eliminating pirated books on Tokopedia, creating a special page for the Pustaka Sastra Festival, to special pages for each Indonesian writer.

“It is also hoped that this initiative will make it easier for people to access original books,” said David in a written statement, Thursday (26/10/2023).

This effort was also appreciated by the Director of Copyright and Industrial Design, Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), Anggoro Dasananto.

According to him, the fight against pirated books is a shared responsibility. He also said that this initiative was a concrete manifestation of Tokopedia’s commitment to eradicating pirated books.

“Hopefully Tokopedia can continue to be an example of an Indonesian digital platform that provides intellectual property-based products,” explained Anggoro.

Several Indonesian writers who collaborate with Tokopedia to present special author pages are Dee Lestari and Adhitya Mulya. According to Dee, piracy of physical and digital books is very detrimental and can injure writers and industry players. On the other hand, Adhitya emphasized that book piracy is a war for all parties.

Adhitya and a group of other writers also really appreciate Tokopedia’s efforts in providing real solutions for writers in Indonesia to combat pirated books and increase the feeling of #ProudToReadOriginalBooks.

Tokopedia even provides the widest opportunity for writers and business people who sell original books to contact the Tokopedia team via email[email protected]so that the products can be curated and uploaded to the special Pustaka Sastra Festival page on Tokopedia.

Tokopedia Explains Efforts and Results to Protect IPR in the First Semester of 2023

Apart from the Literature Library Festival, Tokopedia has carried out a series of efforts to protect IPR. These efforts have led Tokopedia to successfully record a number of achievements in intellectual property protection throughout the first semester of 2023.

For example, these efforts include the removal of more than 80 million products that violate IPR or Tokopedia’s Terms and Conditions.

Second, Tokopedia has an automation and technology system to prevent IP violations. The aim is clear, namely to prevent the distribution of products that violate IP, such as detection systems to check product attributes, image detection systems and also machine learning to detect counterfeit product patterns.

Third, Tokopedia has provided the Tokopedia IP Reporting Portal channel and to date has helped more than 2,000 IPR holders fight IPR violations. The success rate for completing KI reports via the Tokopedia KI Reporting Portal has reached 99%.

Fourth, create a Tokopedia Brand Alliance program which was initiated together with IPR holders to strengthen protection and combat the circulation of counterfeit goods on Tokopedia.IPR holders can get a number of benefits, for example reviewing product counterfeit reports directly on a special dashboard, faster time for the process of removing counterfeit products, accessing special features to analyze reports and engaging in constructive IPR discussions.

Fifth, give penalties and reduce store performance scores to IPR violators. Currently there are more than 43 thousand sellers who have violated IP and have been successfully moderated or prohibited from operating.

Sixth, Tokopedia prevents sellers who have previously been proven to have violated IP from creating accounts again. In mitigating repeat violations, Tokopedia utilizes the User Relationship Graph. This graphic can prevent sellers who have previously committed IPR violations and been deactivated by Tokopedia from creating new accounts.

Apart from that, Tokopedia has also tightened its IPR violation system and policies, which allows the process of deactivating products and stores that violate IPR to take place more quickly.

The latest effort, Tokopedia provides education about IP to sellers, starting via e-mail, notifications, seller dashboards, Tokopedia’s IP protection platform, articles to videos in the Seller Education Center and various other media.

Tokopedia has also collaborated with the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights to hold IPR education activities for MSMEs in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bali. Through various IP education efforts, 80% of sellers who were previously sanctioned for IP violations were recorded as having changed their behavior and stopped committing violations.

“Thanks to various proactive efforts carried out by Tokopedia, there has been a reduction in the number of reports of IPR violations by more than 50%. This is a positive signal of the success of Tokopedia and its strategic partners in fighting IPR violations in Indonesia, especially on the Tokopedia platform,” explained David.
