Minister Teten Leaks About TikTok Shop Wanting to Reopen at RI Tech – 6 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs Teten Masduki revealed how TikTok Shop will reopen its services in Indonesia. This platform from China is approaching e-commerce which already existed in Indonesia.

According to Teten, Tiktok has met with five companies. These include Tokopedia, Bukalapak, and Blibli.

“A number of e-commerce companies in Indonesia have discussed with TikTok,” said Teten, quoted from Reuters, Tuesday (14/11/2023).

Reuters reported that a TikTok Indonesia spokesperson could not comment on this matter. Meanwhile, Tokopedia declined to comment, a Bukalapak representative said it was unaware of the conversation, and Blibli did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

TikTok Shop officially closed at the beginning of last October. The closure is based on Minister of Trade Regulation 31 of 2023 which prohibits social media from becoming e-commerce.

TikTok also seems to be taking various steps to be able to resume operations in Indonesia. Not long ago, CEO Shou Chew reportedly wrote to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and stated that he wanted to meet.

Jokowi handed this over to Teten and asked him to meet Chew. When met some time ago, he did not talk much about the details of the conversation.

“Yes, we’ll see the details later when we find them. I was assigned by the president, so I’ll do it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports Teten and Chew will meet later this month. Teten also said he would ask for TikTok’s commitment regarding its business in Indonesia.

“I want them to commit to having a sustainable business that does not harm domestic SME products,” said Teten.
