Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The results of a survey by the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) show that the movement of people during the Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024 holidays is predicted to reach 107.63 million people or 39.83% of Indonesia’s total population. This figure jumped 143.65% compared to the movement of Indonesian citizens during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) holiday season a year earlier.

The survey also predicts that the peak flow of homecoming/away or departure during the 2023 Christmas holiday will be Saturday 23 December 2023. With movement predicted to reach 11.62% or 12.5 million people. Meanwhile, the peak flow of departures during the 2024 New Year holiday is predicted to occur on Saturday, December 30 2023 with a portion of 11.43% (12.31 million people). Apart from that, it is also predicted that on Friday, December 22 2023, there will be a departure flow of 8.85 million people or 8.22%.

Meanwhile, the peak return flow is predicted to occur on Tuesday 2 January 2024 at 18.96% (20.41 million people), then Monday (1 January 2024) at 16.92% (18.21 million people), and Tuesday (26 December 2023) as much as 11.16% (12.01 million people).


“In last year’s Christmas holiday, it was predicted that 44.17 million people would move, while this year it was predicted that 107.63 million people would move. So the increase is very significant, above one hundred percent (143.65%),” said Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi in a statement. official, Monday (20/11/2023).

It is estimated that the transportation nodes that will be packed with passengers from both origin and destination areas include Senen Station, Gambir Station, Sidoarjo Station, Bandung Station, Tugu Station, Amplas Medan Type A Terminal, Purbaya Type A Terminal, Merak Ferry Port, Tanjung Perak Port , Tenau Harbor, Soekarno Hatta Airport, and Ngurah Rai Airport.

This survey was conducted using the online questionnaire distribution method via Whatsapp, Instagram and SMS Blast. The survey implementation period is one month, from 26 October to 2 November 2023. The implementation of the survey involves a number of parties including the media, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Kominfo, academics and transportation sector practitioners.

It was explained that the results of this survey were the basis and input for preparing operational plans for the implementation of the 2023/2024 Christmas and New Year Transport carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, Ministries/Institutions, and also other related parties.

A number of inputs/recommendations were also submitted to local governments, starting from promoting bundling rates for urban mass transportation with tourist destinations to attract people’s interest in using public transportation. Other inputs include developing safety policies and smooth traffic flow, adding security personnel, increasing arterial road safety facilities in the regions, and improving road infrastructure.

Meanwhile, recommendations to other relevant agencies are to regulate traffic engineering management, regulate capacity/space in rest areas with notifications, add public street lighting on toll roads, limit types of goods transportation on peak dates, provide early warning of extreme weather, and alert for rescue and help seeking in vulnerable and tourist areas.
