Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs asked Instagram to block accounts selling used imported products. Minister Teten Masduki confirmed his party’s meeting with the Meta subsidiary.
Instagram was asked to remove accounts selling used clothing products from Bandung. Teten argued that sales activities were not permitted.
“Because we found there was an account in Bandung that was selling used clothing products, that’s illegal. So we asked Instagram to take down that account, because that’s not allowed,” said Teten when met at the office of the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Jakarta, last October .
However, Instagram, called Teten, seems to have no responsibility to block it. Because according to the platform, the uploads do not belong to Instagram.
“But Instagram feels they have no responsibility for that, because it’s not Instagram, they only provide it as a platform,” explained Teten.
This is not the first time selling illegal second-hand clothes on e-commerce and social media. Previously the same findings had also been found on Google.
However, Teten said Google did things differently compared to Instagram. The search engine giant immediately removed the content of the used clothing seller.
He emphasized that the platform has full responsibility for the content distributed on it. Instagram, as a social media giant, also needs to implement the same measures on its platform.
“So at that time we appealed to Google, they took it down, no one is selling or promoting illegal used clothes anymore,” he said.
In Indonesia itself, there are no regulations regarding platform responsibility for their content. However, the platform was asked to commit because it does business in Indonesia.
“Well, selling smuggled goods is a crime, so we want them to have that commitment. The development of platform regulations in the world is like that. The platform must be responsible for the content on the platform,” explained Teten.
