Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaThe International Football Federation (FIFA) announced that Saudi Arabia is the only country running to host the 2034 World Cup by the nomination deadline on Tuesday (31/10/2023).

“A statement of interest from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation has been received for the 2034 FIFA World Cup,” FIFA wrote on its official website, quoted on Wednesday (1/11/2023).

Previously, Australia had proposed to organize the 2024 World Cup. However, Australian Football Federation (F.A) officially declared his resignation from bidding candidate to host the 2034 World Cup on the last day of submission, Tuesday (31/10/2023).

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, has confirmed that the 24th edition of the FIFA World Cup will take place in the territory ruled by King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Infantino conveyed this via his personal Instagram account (@gianni_infantino).

“The world’s biggest event will be held in Canada, Mexico and the United States in 2026 in North America. The next two editions of the FIFA World Cup will be held in Africa (Morocco) and Europe (Portugal and Spain) with three celebration matches being played in South America ( Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay in 2030 and in Asia (Saudi Arabia) in 2034,” wrote Infantino.

Even though it has been announced by Infantino, FIFA will still carry out the process of approving Saudi Arabia as host of the 2034 World Cup. However, ESPN stated that the decision to be taken at the end of next year was only a formality.

Thus, Saudi Arabia will become the fourth country on the Asian continent to host the World Cup after South Korea (2002), Japan (2002) and Qatar (2022).

Previously, FIFA invited countries in Asia and Oceania to apply to host the 2034 World Cup with a deadline of October 31, 2023.

After registering as a potential host, Australia suddenly withdrew on the last day of submissions.

“We have explored the opportunity to bid to host the FIFA World Cup, and after considering all factors, we have reached the conclusion not to do so for the 2034 competition,” read a statement from the FA.
