Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MenKP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono revealed that every week he is busy signing export permits for ornamental fish, especially Arowana. This follows due to the high demand for exports of these commodities.
“Almost every week I sign the export of ornamental fish, mainly Arowana. I sign Arowana and several for later export,” said Trenggono when opening the Archipelago Ornamental Fish Festival at Ecowalk Mall Jakarta, Friday (27/10/2023).
Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP) of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Budi Sulistyo explained that Arowana is included in CITES Appendix I, so if you want to trade this ornamental fish it must be captive bred, and requires an export permit if traded on the market international.
“Yes, the Arowana export permit is because Arowana is included in CITES Appendix I. It must have a special permit to be permitted to release the species outside (the country),” explained Budi when met by journalists at Ecowalk Mall Kuningan Jakarta, Friday (27/10/ 2023).
Budi said that Arowana is an export commodity that generates quite a lot of foreign exchange for the country every year. Arowana annually contributes almost US$ 8 million in foreign exchange or around Rp. 127 billion per year (exchange rate Rp. 15,900).

“This arowana is one of our exports which generates enough foreign exchange for the country, every year it is almost US$ 8 million dollars per year,” he said.
“Because this fish is already well known, but people already know that it comes from Indonesia,” added Budi.
The biggest export destination, said Budi, is China. “Many arowana go to China,” he said.
Meanwhile, the types of arowana that are widely exported, he continued, are the Super Red Arowana from Kalimantan and the Jardini Arowana from Papua.
“(The type being exported) is the Super Red Arowana from Kalimantan. Then what is currently being developed is the Jardini Arwana from Papua. (The Jardini Arwana) is starting to be loved, starting to be known internationally,” said Budi.
“For this reason, we remind business actors to be careful, be prepared, we will work together so that the Arowana Jardini becomes our leading export commodity. So we will protect this endemic ornamental fish,” he added.
According to Budi, the unique thing about the Arowana Jardini is its unique silver color, so that is the attraction of this endemic type of ornamental fish.
“(Arowana Jardini) is unique, its color is silver, but it is unique,” he said.
For your information, the Irian or Jardini Arowana has a brownish black base color with golden yellow spots in the middle of its scales, even on the head (cheeks) to the fins and tail there are yellow spots.
Jardini comes from Australia, although it is often found on the island of Papua. Therefore, this type is also sometimes called the Irian arowana by hobbyists. There are actually two types of Jardini arowana colors, namely darker basic colors and lighter ones. The one with a darker base color is Scleropages jardini and the one with a lighter base is Scleropqges leichharti.
