Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Director General of Customs and Excise Askolani revealed a number of methods used by smugglers to import illegal goods into Indonesia, including through rat ports and large ports.
“The method is other than rat ports, (through) large ports this can also happen. (By playing) Under invoicing documents (stating the price is less than the actual price) and under declaring (not according to the declaration in the document),” said Askolani during a press statement on the destruction of imported goods illegal at the Cikarang Customs and Excise Stockpiling Complex, Simpangan, North Cikarang District, Bekasi Regency, West Java, Thursday (26/10/2023).
Also present were Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, and Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan.
Therefore, said Askolani, his party is currently intensifying supervision at large ports and mouse ports. Based on his records, the majority of illegal imported goods entering Indonesia come from Malaysia.
“Mainly, we have intensified monitoring of rat ports and ship transportation in recent weeks. And the dominant entry is from Malaysia,” he explained.
Askolani also revealed that in the last two weeks the Director General of Customs and Excise has taken action against at least 1,600 bales of illegally imported used clothing in the East Coast area of Sumatra Island.
“In this two week period we caught more than 1,600 bales on the East Coast of Sumatra,” said Askolani.
For this reason, in an effort to overcome the problem of the proliferation of illegally imported goods, Askolani said that his party would continue to collaborate with the Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the Directorate General of PKTN at the Ministry of Trade.

Tightened
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto gave a signal that he would continue to tighten supervision of the flow of imported goods so as not to further damage the domestic market. One way is by adding items that will be monitored using a border mechanism. It is also hoped that the current actions taken will have a deterrent effect.
The sectors hardest hit by illegal imports include MSMEs, cosmetics, textiles, clothing and children’s toys.
“We are changing from post border to border. Of course with this change there are 8 regulations from various ministries that must be revised. With this revision it will certainly become more difficult to do things that are illegal. This is what we are tightening, so as not to let domestic industry “, small and medium industries (IKM) which have a large market, but are flooded with goods from abroad whose markets abroad are growing. This will be protected by the government,” he said.
“Of course we can change this again later, we can increase the post border again. We will see the results. And in essence, this remains from the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, the Directorate General of PKTN (Consumer Protection and Orderly Commerce) at the Ministry of Trade, and the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit,” Airlangga emphasized.
