Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The mystery of the strangely shaped mermaid mummy has finally been revealed. According to experts, the mummy found hundreds of years ago was a combination of three species at once.
The mummy was brought by American sailors from Japan in 1906. The species was donated to the Clark County Historical Society in Springfield, Ohio.
The shape is quite strange from the teeth to having large claws. The underside is like a fish and has fine hairy gray hairs.
“This appears to be a combination of at least three externally distinct species,” said Northern Kentucky University radiologist Joseph Cress. Daily MailFriday (27/10/2023).

“The head and chest are those of a monkey, the hands are like an amphibian like an alligator, crocodile, or some kind of lizard. And there is a fish tail, the species is unknown,” he added.
Natalie Fritz of the Clark County Historical Society explained that the mummy may date back to the 1870s. The species, he said, was similar to the legendary Fijian mermaid.
In Japan, those who eat meat become immortal. Fijian mermaids at one of the temples in Asakuchi are also venerated.
This revelation came from a CT scan used on the mummy. According to Cress, the CT scan allowed them to select pieces of the artifact and find out whether they were once real animals.
For example, the nostrils or ear cavities can explain parts of the creature’s body. Cress said all parts of the mummy were CT scanned.
“We did all the parts of the Fiji mermaid. Not just the head and face, but also the chest and tip of the tail,” he said.
