Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) revealed that a number of foreign companies are interested in building nuclear power plants (PLTN) in Indonesia. These companies include those from the United States (US) to Russia.
Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi, said that currently there are three companies interested in building nuclear power plants in Indonesia. Apart from ThorCon Power Indonesia, another US company that is looking to build a nuclear power plant in Indonesia is NuScale.
“As far as we know, the one that is running other than ThorCon is NuScale, which has signed with Indonesia Power, collaborating to study the US NuScale route,” said Yudo when met at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Building, Tuesday (24/10/2023).
Apart from the two companies from the US, the next company interested in building a nuclear power plant in Indonesia is Rosatom. This company comes from Russia.
“One of the people who offered three or four weeks ago in Vienna, the IAEA General Conference, was from Russia Rosatom, they have been in constant communication for a long time, for years,” he said.
Furthermore, Yudo explained that for NuScale itself the plan was to develop a small-scale nuclear power plant or Small Modular Reactor (SMR). SMR technology is believed to be safer for remote areas and islands in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Rosatom will develop a large-scale nuclear plant. One of the things Rosatom is building is a nuclear plant in Bangladesh.
“There is something they are building in Bangladesh, for example, it is quite large in scale. Then they also have a small SMR which is currently available, currently it is operating from Russia, Rosatom is used for icebreakers, that is the place in the north there, far north for breaking the ice,” he added.
Previously, PT ThorCon Power Indonesia said it was preparing to build the first nuclear power plant in Indonesia which is targeted to start operating in 2030.
ThorCon Chief Operating Officer, Bob S. Effendi said that in November 2024, his party will start the first steel cutting which will be carried out at a South Korean shipyard.
After that, Bob targets that in 2027, the nuclear power plant unit will arrive in Indonesia. The location chosen was in the Bangka Belitung Islands. Apart from that, the operational permit for the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten) is targeted for 2029.
“Commercial operation target 2030, First steel cutting (first steel cutter) at shipyard in South Korea, November 2024, nuclear power plant unit to location 2027, Bapeten operating permit target 2029,” he explained to CNBC Indonesia.
He revealed that the targeted timeline for the process of building a domestic nuclear power plant is still being discussed further with Bapeten. Apart from that, he also explained that in the future the NPP, which is predicted to be the first NPP candidate in Indonesia, will have a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW).
