Jokowi asks for Israel-Hamas ceasefire, Biden refuses! News – 10 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – United States President Joe Biden has chosen to be at odds with the international world, requesting an Israeli ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi also expressed the urge for a ceasefire, including when he met with Biden at the White House earlier this week.

However, Biden insisted on refusing for specific reasons. He conveyed this rejection in the Opinions column in The Washington Post newspaper, Saturday (18/11/2023) local time. According to him, the idea of a ceasefire will not stop wars in the region.

“As long as Hamas adheres to its ideology of destruction, a ceasefire is not peace,” said Biden, quoted by the Washington Post, Sunday (19/11/2023).

He argued that a ceasefire would actually benefit Hamas. Biden said this was because they would take advantage of the ceasefire period to rebuild rocket stockpiles, reposition fighters, and restart killings by attacking innocent people again.

“An outcome that would put Hamas back in control of Gaza, perpetuating its hatred and depriving Palestinian civilians of the opportunity to build something better for themselves,” Biden said.

Biden emphasized that his current goal is to ensure that the problem of war there is ended forever and not just to stop the war for a moment. He also wants to end or break the cycle of violence in Gaza which continues to repeat itself.

Regarding Israel, he also called on his government and the country’s military to respect international humanitarian law and minimize civilian casualties in their actions in the Palestinian enclave.

He said he had advised Israeli officials during his trip to Tel Aviv not to let their pain and anger mislead them into making mistakes he acknowledged he had made himself in the past.

In his article in the newspaper, Biden also suggested that a two-state solution was the only way to resolve the chronic conflict in the region. He also stated that in Gaza there must be a government under the control of the Palestinian Authority.

“The Palestinian people deserve their own state and a future free from Hamas. I am also heartbroken to see the images in Gaza and the deaths of thousands of civilians, including children,” said Biden.

Therefore, Biden emphasized that peace efforts in Gaza and Palestine are, “Gaza and the West Bank must be reunited under one government structure, ultimately under the revitalization of the Palestinian Authority, as we all work towards a two-state solution,” stressed Biden. .
