Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Officials from Israel and the United States (US) have opened their voices regarding the postponement of the temporary ceasefire for four days in Gaza, Palestine. Previously, Israel agreed to a pause in the war in exchange for the release of 50 hostages by Hamas.
The chairman of Israel’s National Security Council, Tzachi Hanegbi, indicated that the release of at least 50 Israeli and foreign hostages held by Hamas was as planned. But it won’t happen until Friday at the earliest.
“Contacts for the release of our hostages are progressing and continuing,” he said in a statement, published The Guardian Thursday (23/11/2023).
“The start of the release will be carried out in accordance with the initial agreement between the two parties, and not before Friday,” he added.
White House spokeswoman Adrienne Watson also made a statement. He said final logistical details for the release were being worked out.
“It is on track and we expect implementation to begin on Friday morning,” Watson said.
In fact, it is not yet clear what caused the delay. But initially, the realization of the agreement, starting from stopping attacks to releasing hostages, will take effect this Thursday.
According to Reuters, his source in Egypt, said that the mediator had requested a start time of 10 am. However, this apparently could not be realized.
On the other hand, Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan, quoted an unnamed Israeli official. It was reported that the 24-hour delay occurred because the agreement was not signed by Hamas and Qatari mediators.
Al-Jazeera also said the same thing. Hamas also reportedly has not provided a list of the prisoners.
It is estimated that there are 240 hostages being held by Hamas. Through the deal, Israel will also free at least 150 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli prisons and allow more humanitarian aid to enter.
“For every 10 additional hostages released, there will be an additional day of lull in fighting,” an Israeli government document said.
