Europe is getting fiercer, Google-Facebook is having a hard time finding money Tech – 3 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The European Union is becoming increasingly aggressive towards technology giants, following the conflicts occurring in the Middle East and ahead of the 2024 political year.

After asking Google, Meta (Facebook, Instagram), et al to clean up disinformation related to the Hamas-Israel war, the European Union is now designing a new policy.

The policy requires platform providers to clearly label political advertisements on social media. If it violates, Google CS can be subject to a fine of 6% of the total advertising turnover in Europe.

In addition, political advertisements are prohibited from displaying someone’s profile based on ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation. This rule is predicted to reduce the number of political advertisements in Europe ahead of the election.

“This new regulation will make it more difficult for certain individuals to spread disinformation to undermine the democratic process,” said Sandro Gozi, leader of the regulation drafting process in the European Parliament, in his official statement, quoted from ReutersWednesday (8/11/2023).

European Union countries and policymakers have agreed to draft this regulation since it was proposed last year by the European Commission. All online political advertising will be available with various restrictions.

The European Parliament will hold elections in June 2024. In this process, it is feared that a lot of disinformation and foreign interference will be smuggled in through online political advertisements.
