China-US Getting Hotter, Mr. Chip Warning The Impact is Horrifying Tech – 7 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The geopolitical conflict between the United States (US) and China is getting hotter and has an impact on the technology industry. The two countries block each other’s technology, in order to hinder each other’s industrial development.

Most recently, the US completely blocked China’s access to US chip technology. China also blocked exports of crucial components needed for chip production.

Founder of semiconductor giant TSMC, Morris Chang, has finally opened his voice about US-China relations which have negative implications for the industry. Morris is an important figure in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Opinions and views are considered significant.

According to him, the breakdown in relations between the two countries will hamper global semiconductor development. In other words, overall technological development will slow down.

“It seems like the two countries are annoyed with each other. This makes me worried,” he said, quoted from AndroidHeadlines, Monday (30/10/2023).

“I think a split between the two camps will slow down the industry as a whole. Of course, the goal in the short term is to slow down China, and that could work,” he added.

TSMC’s position is quite crucial in the struggle between the US and China. TSMC is a semiconductor giant from Taiwan. Relations between China and Taiwan themselves are actually not good.

China believes Taiwan is part of its country and must submit to Xi Jinping’s government. This has the potential to pose a threat to the global chip supply chain.

Meanwhile, TSMC is a manufacturer with a large client portfolio from the US. These include Apple, Qualcomm, AMD, Nvidia, and Intel.

The US provides billions of US dollars in subsidies for TSMC to build production laboratories. One of the TSMC facilities being built in Arizona will reportedly produce the most advanced chips with a 3nm manufacturing process in 2026.

“In general, I think the US-China conflict has a bad impact on all parties,” he said.

He said that the development of the chip industry now no longer leads to globalization. According to his observations, this chip is considered a national security tool. Because of the conflict, chip development will be hampered.
