Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – It turns out that the Hamas militant group has a cyber force that has long been operating to break through Israel’s sophisticated security system. The Hamas cyber army’s modus operandi varies, from pornographic videos to beautiful women’s Facebook accounts.
The Global Network on Extremism and Technology states that Hamas’ cyber department has been active for at least 10 years. His main weapon was a malware program which was then used to spy on Israeli troops and steal important information.
In 2013, for example, the Hamas group succeeded in seizing access to Israeli government employees and infrastructure management companies by sending pornographic videos. The pornographic videos are packaged in RAR files with malware. When opened, the malware is automatically downloaded and set to activate every time the system is loaded.reboot.
Hamas then used new tactics starting in 2015. The armed group targeted Israeli army personnel with fake Facebook accounts. To appear realistic, the stealth Facebook account run by Hamas uses credible images and routinely posts “likes” to Israeli news accounts, politicians and companies.
Hamas hackers began developing a new method in 2018, namely by hacking fitness applications used by Israeli soldiers while jogging. They also succeeded in infiltrating Israeli soldiers’ cellphones through the Golden Cup application which was used to watch the 2018 World Cup. In 2020, it was the turn of dating applications called Catch & See and GrixyApp to become Hamas’ weapons.
The techniques used by Hamas hackers are always more or less the same. In the first stage, Israeli soldiers were approached using their Facebook account and then invited to communicate using WhatsApp. When the conversation moved to sexual topics, Israeli soldiers were lured into downloading an Android chat application. When Israeli soldiers were caught downloading pornographic video files, their devices were infected with malware.
Through these various techniques and modes, Hamas succeeded in hacking the cellphones of many Israeli soldiers and gaining access to telephone applications, cameras and files on them. From this access, Hamas managed to steal information about Israeli military bases and weapons.
After detecting Hamas’ cyber capabilities, Israel bombed the headquarters of Hamas’ cyber forces in 2019.
However, according to an Israeli cyber defense company, the capabilities of Hamas’ cyber forces remain strong and have even become more sophisticated.
The Global Network on Extremism and Technology estimates that the information used by Hamas to carry out the October 7 attack was obtained through hacking methods.
