A child has died of measles after being treated in intensive care at Liverpool.

The child, who was treated at the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, had not been identified.

The reason we see more cases of measles in children and our teenagers is because fewer people who have an MMR vaccine, which protects against measles and two other viruses called gumps and rubella.

The number of children treated in Alder Hey for measles effects and complications increases. Children in a very bad hospital for other reasons, are at higher risk of capturing viruses.

What is measles?

Measles is caused by a very contagious virus that can infect anyone who is not immune. Symptoms can be severe and cause an increase in the number of children being treated in our hospital. In rare cases, capturing this disease can be fatal. There is no special treatment for measles.

Anyone can catch measles at any age. The mixture is very dangerous for some of our children and adolescents who are the most vulnerable, including those who are under one year old and those who have struggled with other serious illnesses such as cancer.

Measles usually starts with watery nose, sneezing, coughing and high temperatures. This can also cause red eyes and pain. Measles rash follows a few days later, starting from the face and behind the ear before spreading throughout the body.

How to prevent my child from catching measles?

MMR vaccination is the safest and best defense against measles.

This vaccine has been available for many years and is proven safe. Two MMR vaccine doses will provide a lifelong protection against measles, goiter and rubella. This vaccination is free and easy to be available from your doctor at any age. For children, the first dose of the vaccine is usually given at the age of 12 months, and the second is around 3 years and 4 months.

Research has shown that there is no relationship between receiving vaccines and developing autism spectrum disorders.

Please protect yourself and our children and teenagers by making sure you are vaccinated.

Anyone who suspects them or their children have measles must call their GP surgery or NHS 111 before appearing in health care settings such as general practitioners, urgent treatment centers or departments of accidents and emergencies, to help stop spreading viruses.

Professor Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool, warned: ‘I am very worried that the potential is there to really master our community. My concern is an unprotected population and spread like fire. ‘

The statement from Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘To respect the confidentiality of the patient, we cannot comment on individual cases.

“We are worried about increasing the number of children and adolescents who are infected with measles. Measles is a very contagious viral disease that can cause children unhealthy, requires treatment in hospitals, and in rare cases, death.

‘The number of children treated at Alder Hey for the effects and complications of measles has increased (we have taken care of 17 since June).

“We take care of children with various conditions and diseases in our hospital, including those who experience immunity that are compromised due to other health problems, making them more vulnerable to infection, including measles.

“We can prevent people, including children, from contracting measles through vaccination. Please protect yourself and your children and adolescents who are vulnerable by making sure you are fully vaccinated. ‘
