Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned all Indonesian people to be alert to the potential for extreme weather, floods and landslides in the near future.
Quoting from an official statement, the Head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, said that most parts of Indonesia have the potential to be hit by extreme weather during the transition period from the dry season to the rainy season.
“Extreme weather has a big potential to occur during the transition season. Starting from heavy rain accompanied by lightning, strong winds and hail,” explained Dwikorita, quoted Tuesday (31/10/2023).
According to Dwikorita, weather changes are usually marked by certain conditions, such as sunny weather in the morning, then cloudy in the afternoon, and ending with rain in the afternoon or evening. He said that varying wind directions could result in sudden weather changes.
“Rainfall can be one of the triggers for wet hydrometeorological disasters, such as flash floods and landslides. Therefore, to people who live in hilly areas that are prone to landslides, we urge them to be alert and careful,” explained Dwikorita.
Furthermore, Dwikorita asked the public to know how to deal with disaster risks, such as floods and landslides that may occur during the rainy season and to always pay attention to early warnings from the BMKG.
Apart from that, Dwikorita revealed that BMKG predicts that the start of the 2023/2024 rainy season will generally occur from October to December 2023, namely 477 Season Zones (ZOM) or 68.2 percent.
Meanwhile, the peak of the rainy season is generally predicted to occur from January to February 2024, namely 385 ZOM or 55.1 percent.
However, Dwikorita explained that the start of the 2023/2024 rainy season in 699 ZOM Indonesia is predicted to be behind by 446 ZOM or around 64 percent, remain at 56 ZOM or around 8 percent, and advance by 22 ZOM or around 3 percent.
Meanwhile, 50 ZOMs have entered the rainy season, 12 ZOMs will have a rainy season throughout 2023, and 113 ZOMs will have one season throughout the year.
“The nature of rain in the 2023/2024 Rainy Season is predicted to be NORMAL 566 ZOM (80.9%), ABOVE NORMAL 69 ZOM (9.9%), and BELOW NORMAL 64 ZOM (9.2%),” wrote BMKG in a statement the same one.
