Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati encouraged ASEAN countries to work together to anticipate the food crisis due to climate change. Primarily, the commitment is to prioritize policy commitments to the environment and food security.
This was expressed by Dwikorita at the Federation of ASEAN Economist Association (FAEA 46) Conference in Yogyakarta, Friday (17/11/2023).
“The current climate change is having a serious impact on the economies of all countries, without exception, including in terms of food security. If this situation continues, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that in 2050 the world will face a food crisis,” said Dwikorita
He explained that based on World Meteorological Organization (WMO) records, 2023 will be a year full of record temperatures. This condition has never happened before, where heat waves occur in many places simultaneously.
Meanwhile, he said, June to August were the three hottest months in history and July 2023 will be the hottest month. The reality of climate change means that 2023 has the potential to be the hottest year in the history of climate records, beating 2016 and 2022.
“Climate change is putting additional pressure on already increasingly scarce water resources and producing what are known as water hotspots,” he added.
Furthermore, Dwikorita said that the threat of a food crisis would eventually spread and impact other crises, including economic and political, thus disrupting the stability and security of the country.
Therefore, he said, before it is too late, various climate change mitigation and adaptation actions need to be carried out. Among them, by changing lifestyles and prioritizing environmentally friendly economic development.
