Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Aqua, a packaged drink brand owned by Danone, is the target of a boycott by Indonesian people because their parent company is accused of supporting Israel. The hashtag #RejectDanoneAqua became a trending topic on social media X or Twitter.
Responding to this issue, Danone provided clarification regarding their position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Danone Indonesia Corporate Communication Director Arif Mujahidin said Danone is a public company operating in 120 countries. Due to this, the company has many employees from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
“As a private entity, Danone has no affiliation with politics anywhere,” said Arief in an official statement, as quoted from Detik newsMonday (13/11/2023).
Danone also emphasized that they do not have factories and do not operate in Israel. On the contrary, in Indonesia Danone has 25 factories with 13,000 employees. The company, which is headquartered in France, also claims that their business serves 1 million traders in Indonesia.
“Danone continues to be committed to developing its investment in Indonesia in order to help the economy, social and health of the Indonesian people,” he said.
The hashtag #RejectDanoneAqua became a trending topic shortly after the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issued a fatwa on the haram for using products that support Israel. Apart from Danone, other multinational companies that are also targets of boycotts are McDonald’s and Starbucks.
