There’s nothing better than relaxing with a cup of tea and a fresh, unopened packet of biscuits.
Chocolate digestifs are always an elite choice, and chances are you’ll choose McVitie’s – it’s a classic for a reason.
But the results are new Metro a taste test might make you rethink your snack choices the next time you go to the store.
We pitted branded and supermarket versions of chocolate digestives against each other in a blind taste test, and there was a surprise winner.
Here’s everything you need to know…
How we do taste testing
The Metro team conducted a blind taste test of milk chocolate digestive biscuits, sampling from Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Asda, Co-op, M&S, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s, as well as branded versions from McVitie’s and Galaxy.
We score each biscuit in five different categories, including chocolate to biscuit ratio, appearance, texture, dunkability and overall taste, so each product has the potential to receive a maximum score of 100.
Which biscuit won Metro’s chocolate digestive taste test?
That was it Marks & Spencer Milk Chocolate Digest (£1.25 for 300g) proved a winner, garnering an overall score of 86 out of 100.
According to M&S, these biscuits contain demerara sugar for a ‘crunchier texture’, and they certainly don’t disappoint in this regard.
The biscuit received high marks for its ‘satisfying crunch’ and ‘memorable taste’, and proved very popular with the team in terms of dunkability (an important factor for any biscuit lover), with a rating of 18 out of 20.
‘The chocolate gets nice and melty, the biscuits soften quite a bit but still have a bit of bite,’ read one review.
This one is sweet, but a little too sweet, and gives it a ‘high quality’ feel, which we like.
In comparison, ‘the nation’s favorite milk chocolate biscuit’, McVitie’sit only scored 61 out of 100 in our testing.
The branded biscuits, which were the most expensive biscuits (priced at £2.25 for 266g), failed to impress the team, as they tasted ‘a bit stale’.
The appearance wasn’t very uniform, and there was a bit of chocolate on top, according to our reviewer. The texture was also considered a bit too ‘crumbly’, meaning it almost ‘crumbles into grit in the mouth’, and the taste was not very pleasant…
That said, McVitie scored pretty well for dunkability (16 out of a possible 20), so there’s always that.
Tesco Milk Chocolate Digest (£1.10 for 300g) came second after M&S, with a total score of 77 out of 100.
The biscuit earned a near perfect score in terms of dunkability, and was hailed as the ‘perfect dunk’.
They also get high marks for their chocolate to biscuit ratio, with a ‘nice, thick layer of chocolate’ on top, which complements the slightly oaty taste of the digestif underneath.
The appearance isn’t the best, with the brown lining described as ‘messy’ and ‘messy’, but they clearly prove that this is a case of don’t judge a book by its cover, as they rank very highly overall.
Asda Milk Chocolate Digest (£1.10 for 300g) came in third with a score of 71 out of 100, and it was praised for its texture, dubbed the ‘crunchiest’ of them all.
However, they lost a few points for appearance as the chocolate wasn’t very shiny, and there were some gaps in the chocolate, meaning the biscuits were visible underneath in some places.
galaxy the biscuit version (£1.50 for 300g) was a surprise hit, with a score of 70.5 out of 100. This branded snack, found on the shelves at Tesco, has lots of chocolate, but ultimately doesn’t taste as good as it looks.
Tower Gate Lidl Milk Chocolate Digest (99p for 300g) was in fifth place with 69 out of 100, while Sainsbury’s (£1.25 for 300g) finished in the middle of the pack, earning 64 out of 100.
At the bottom of the scoreboard there is waitrose, as the property of the retailer Essential Milk Chocolate Digestive Biscuits (£1.30 for 300g).
It only managed a score of 46 out of 100, with its biscuity texture being compared to that of a ‘brick’. Some people who tried it also commented that it was ‘too rough’.
Its score for overall taste was very low (four out of a possible 20), which was a surprise considering the quality of the Waitrose product and the price (it was one of the more expensive options we tried).
One scathing comment alongside the score read: ‘Not a single fan, very loud, almost feels stale. There was a solid coating of chocolate, but that didn’t really matter because I was too busy worrying about my teeth, because it was so hard.
‘This is a really bad biscuit – it shouldn’t be called a chocolate digestif. There’s no love put into these biscuits.’
