Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas had been associated with Manchester United’s work when Ruben Amorim struggled to avoid sacks.

The Manchester United hierarchy seemed ready to remain with Amorim for now but the legendary club Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt believed that it could change if they failed to defeat Sunderland who had just been promoted on Saturday.

A number of managers have begun to be associated with Old Trafford’s work, with Crystal Palace Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola from Bournemouth are believed to be admired by the Manchester giant.

Former British manager Gareth Southgate also appeared as a candidate who might be to replace Amorim, who won the back-to-back league title at a former sports club.

Southgate was responsible for Britain for eight years and led Three Lions to the two main final at that time, although fans remained disappointed because he could not end waiting for silver.

Fabregas, who played more than 300 matches for Arsenal and later won two Premier League titles in Chelsea, had been impressed as long as his spell was responsible for Italy Como.

The former Spanish and Barcelona stars will be a controversial choice given his battle with Manchester United for years.

Amorim, speaking after United’s latest defeat of Brentford, insisted he ‘did not care’ about his work.

“I never worried about my job – I am not a man like that,” he said. ‘This is not my decision. I will do my best that I can every minute here. ‘
