Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Gout or gout is a type of arthritis that occurs due to the buildup of uric acid crystals. This condition can occur in joints such as the ankles, knees and most often attacks the big toe.
Uric acid levels in the blood are greatly influenced by the food consumed. For this reason, gout sufferers are advised to limit foods that are high in purine. Because purines are substances that can trigger gout flare-ups.
There are several types of taboo foods that are prohibited for gout sufferers. The following are some foods that cause gout that need to be avoided:
1. Bread
Refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pastries and cakes can make your blood sugar spike and are not good for gout.
2. Honey
Honey contains high fructose, a natural sweetener
which releases purines as they break down in your body. Limit drinks or foods that contain fructose to a minimum to stop or reduce gout attacks.
3. Alcohol
Alcoholic drinks, especially beer, can also increase uric acid levels in the body. Apart from containing lots of purines, beer also slows down the process of eliminating uric acid through urine.
Beer increases uric acid by 6.5%. Even non-alcoholic beer raises it by 4.4%.
4. Seafood
Gout sufferers are advised to avoid consuming seafood that contains lots of purines, such as shellfish, anchovies, sardines, tuna, oysters, shrimp, lobster or crab. Excessive seafood consumption can increase uric acid levels and worsen gout symptoms.
If you want to consume seafood that is rich in nutrients but low in purines, sea eel or gindara fish could be the right choice.
5. Offal
Offal such as liver and tongue are high in purines, compounds that your body tends to convert into uric acid. Avoid these from your diet.
6. Red Meat
Red meat such as beef, pork and lamb is high in protein. However, these meats are classified as foods that cause gout because of their high purine levels.
If you want to maintain blood uric acid levels, you can replace red meat with chicken or vegetable protein sources, such as soybeans which can be found in tempeh and tofu.
7. Chickpeas
Beans are a very popular vegetable in Indonesia because they can be processed into many delicious foods, such as various stir-fries and fresh vegetables. However, beans are known to have high fructose which can trigger gout.
8. Mushrooms
Mushrooms have quite high purine content in each portion. Therefore, gout sufferers must avoid the vegetables that are mixed in many of these dishes.
9. Spinach
Apart from being easy to process, spinach is known to be high in nutrients such as vitamin C, flavonoids, iron, beta carotene and lutein.
However, gout sufferers should avoid spinach because it has a high purine content. In every 100 grams, there are approximately 57 grams of purines.
10. Cauliflower
The next vegetable to avoid is cauliflower. These vegetables are usually only a complement to every dish. Cauliflower needs to be avoided by gout sufferers because it has 23 grams of purine in every 100 grams.
