Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Thousands of birds of prey from Russia enter Indonesia. Indonesian Bird Communication Partnership Adviser, Ria Saryanthi, explained the cause of this phenomenon.
He said Siberian raptors have a habit of migrating to tropical regions during the winter. These flocks of birds are able to travel across continents to get to warmer places.
“This valuable natural phenomenon occurs regularly where these birds fly from location and breed during the winter to a warm location to spend their time waiting for the winter to end,” he said, as quoted by detikJabar.
Thousands of birds, Ria explained, had traveled through the eastern lands. From China, the Malay Peninsula and ending on the islands of Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
The herd was seen in the Sanggabuana Mountains forest area, Tegalwaru District, Karawang Regency. Thousands of birds were seen flying in the area in October 2023 at 07:00 WIB.
Four types of migratory birds have been recorded in the Sanggabuana Mountains. The information comes from observations over four days from 29 October to 1 November 2023.
“We managed to observe Pernis ptilorhynchus, Accipiter gularis, Accipiter soloensis, and Merops philippinus, which migrated from Siberia and stopped to breed in the Sanggabuana Mountains,” he said.
For information, raptors are meat eaters (carnivores). This bird has three characteristics, namely sharp eyesight, eight sharp claws, and a hooked beak.
Raptors have been around for 50-75 million years in various forms. In the world there are 482 raptor species, 304 diurnal species that are active during the day, and 178 nocturnal species (active at night).
