Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – TikTok follows Meta’s steps to reject the ‘gatekeeper’ status granted by the European Union in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations.
According to these regulations, a technology giant falls into the ‘gatekeeper’ category when it has more than 45 million monthly active users (MAU) and a market value of 75 billion euros (Rp. 1,265 trillion).
When entering the ‘gatekeeper’ category, companies are required to comply with stricter regulations.
This is to maintain a healthy competitive climate, as well as to provide freedom for users to switch from one service to another.
This week, Meta denied gatekeeper status for several of its service members. For example, Messenger and Marketplace. Meta does not deny being called the gatekeeper for the Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms.
Meanwhile, TikTok refuses to fall into the gatekeeper category. According to company representatives, the European Union lists gatekeeper status based on the global business performance of parent company ByteDance.
“Our refusal is based on the belief that our appointment risks undermining the DMA’s goal of protecting the competitive climate between gatekeepers and new competitors such as TikTok,” said a company statement, quoted by Reuters, Thursday (16/11/2023).
“Far from being a gatekeeper, our platform, which has only been operating in Europe for just over five years, can be said to be a challenger to platforms that are more entrenched over the years,” the company continued.
TikTok said its service does not qualify as a gatekeeper based on revenues in the European region of 7.5 billion euros per year.
The European Union has previously selected 22 gatekeeper services, 6 of which are entities in the technology sector. These include Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Meta, and TikTok.
Google and Amazon accept this status and are willing to follow stricter rules. Meanwhile, Apple has not yet commented.
