A story full of love and sacrifice comes from Cimerang village, Padalarang, West Bandung Regency. In an old boarded-up hut without electricity, Komariah endures the bitter life she has led in her old age and takes care of her only daughter, Imas, who is mentally ill.
Dependent on uncertain agricultural products often makes Komariah have to struggle. It doesn’t matter if she doesn’t eat for a day, or even a week, Komariah can live it up, as long as her child’s stomach can be filled.
“Mother doesn’t eat, as long as mother’s child can eat. Every day Mother doesn’t eat, it’s okay, the important thing is just this child, or just drinking water and fasting. Mother fasts if it’s okay for up to a week. Once there’s cassava, “The cassava is removed then boiled, grated, steamed and then made into rice,” said Komariah to the merdekabaik.id team.
Imas, who is now 42 years old, often loses control, hitting, throwing and even doing dangerous things for himself and others, even his mother. It is suspected that Imas experienced mental pressure which ultimately caused him to have a mental disorder.
“Usually likes to collect rubbish and then put it here (into her clothes). I don’t know, she had this disease when she had a husband. Only lasted a year and then divorced,” explained Komariah
Therefore, to avoid bad things, Imas was forced to be shackled at home so that Komariah could work, cook or fetch water from the house. Even though his heart was cut, Komariah had no other choice. He must continue to fight to continue his and his daughter’s daily life.
The shack house they live in now is also very worrying. Leaks here and there which are only temporarily patched. Even basic needs such as a bathroom are far from adequate because it is only a small, semi-enclosed room in front of the house. Not to mention wild animals that enter their residence.
“Yes, while I was sleeping, a monitor lizard passed by. It was 2 meters long,” he said.
Due to the lack of electricity and costs, Komariah does not have a water pump at home. To meet her water needs for bathing, cooking and washing, Komariah has to go back and forth 10-15 times to her neighbor’s house, which is about 300 m from her house.
He was grateful that he could get this water for free from his neighbors. Every morning, Komariah has to rush to get water because the water routinely stops flowing at 11 am. Sometimes, Imas also helps the mother to fetch water.
