The Lego Tropical Aquarium is a fish tank that you don’t have to clean

Lego has another tempting set for adults this Christmas, but compared to other licensed products, it features some very low maintenance pet fish.

While Lego sets aimed at adults often involve famous movie creations, from Star Wars’ Death Star space station to Captain Jack Sparrow’s ship from Pirates of the Caribbean, there are plenty of sets that look just as cool but are based on more sobering subjects.

Rivera’s recent Italian set is one example and now there’s Tropical Aquarium, which is another giant set for adults, but doesn’t feature any of the film’s vehicles or action features.

It takes a total of 4,154 Lego pieces to make an aquarium that measures 36cm high, 52cm wide and 28cm deep. It allows for four realistically designed fish, as well as a number of aquatic plants, a sea crab, and an open treasure chest.

While there’s no actual water or glass in the tank, there’s a clever pattern on the back to give the impression of water and rising oxygen bubbles.

There are also sea worms, oyster shells with pearls, and some sea snails and sea worms. So, not only is there no water needed, but there’s also no maintenance or cleaning required whatsoever, except maybe the occasional dusting.

As Lego becomes more accepted as an adult toy – with many people enjoying the relaxing process of putting together a model, especially when done with a friend or loved one – these kinds of decorative sets are becoming more common, especially if the Lego can be easily placed on a living room shelf, without looking out of place.

Of course, a Lego set of this size isn’t cheap and costs £399.99 in the UK, either from a Lego store or the official Lego website.

It’s definitely not an impulse buy, but like most large Lego sets, it’s positioned as a birthday or Christmas gift so you’ve got plenty of time to save. Plus, if this is a little out of your reach, there are usually lower priced alternatives that have at least a similar theme, such as the Sea Animals set for £24.99.

Tropical Aquarium will be released on November 16, but if you’re a Lego Insider (which just requires a free registration), you can get it in early access starting November 13.

Plus, if you order it between November 13th and 19th, you’ll get a free gift with your purchase that isn’t available any other way. It includes a fish tank filter and some Lego fish food, which is a pretty obvious homage to Finding Nemo.
