Teten Asks Instagram to Block Accounts Selling Used Imported Goods Tech – 5 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, Teten Masduki, revealed that his team met with Instagram because they found an account selling imported used clothing products. It has asked the platform to block the account due to illegal activity.

“Because we found there was an account in Bandung that was selling used clothing products, that’s illegal. So we asked Instagram to take down that account, because that’s not allowed,” said Teten when met at the office of the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Jakarta, Wednesday ( 10/25/2023).

However, Teten said Instagram felt it had no responsibility to reduce it. Because the company acts as a platform.

“But Instagram feels they have no responsibility for that, because it’s not Instagram, they only provide it as a platform,” explained Teten.

According to him, selling illegal second-hand clothes through e-commerce and social media could have a big impact. This is also not the first time this seller has appeared on Instagram.

Previously, it had also been found on Google. However, Teten said the search engine giant immediately removed the content from its platform.

“So at that time we appealed to Google, they took it down, no one is selling or promoting illegal used clothes anymore,” he said.

The platform has full responsibility for the content on the platform. According to him, Instagram must start implementing this ethic.

Even though there are no regulations yet, the government wants a commitment from platforms because they do business in Indonesia. Because selling smuggled used goods is criminal and illegal.

“Well, selling smuggled goods is a crime, so we want them to have that commitment. The development of platform regulations in the world is like that. The platform must be responsible for the content on the platform,” explained Teten.
