What is monkey pox actually?
According to the official website of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, monkey pox is a rare zoonotic disease caused by a viral infection monkeypox.
Monkey pox was first discovered in 1958, when there was an outbreak of a smallpox-like disease that attacked pet monkeys for research. Meanwhile, the first case of monkey pox that infected humans was first discovered in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Health, dr. Mohammad Syahril, revealed that the typical symptom of monkey pox that cannot be found in cases of chicken pox is enlarged glands in the neck, armpits or groin around the genitals.
However, in 2022, The World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that monkey pox is not a sexually transmitted disease. However, you need to know that this disease can be transmitted during sexual intercourse, such as:

- Hugging, massaging, kissing, or talking from very close range
- Touching fabrics and objects during sex that are used by monkeypox sufferers, such as bedding, towels and sex toys.

To prevent the development of monkey pox, The Ministry of Health has started providing free vaccines to the Indonesian people. Currently, vaccines are given to priority groups who have a high risk, namely perpetrators of same-sex relationships.
“(Monkey pox vaccination) is free. (Target recipients of the vaccine) are MSM groups or men who have sex with men with a history of risky sexual activity,” said the Head of the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s Communications and Public Services Bureau, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi to CNBC Indonesia, Tuesday (24/10/2023).
According to a press release from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the monkeypox vaccine will be given to 447 people starting Tuesday (24/10/2023).
