Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Monkey pox has become a new concern among Indonesian society. Moreover, the Ministry of Health’s report predicts that there will be a significant increase in positive cases until the end of next year.
The Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, said that the culprit behind the increasing trend of monkey pox in the country was mobility which had returned to normal after the pandemic ended.
Please note, according to the Ministry of Health’s report, all monkey pox patients in Indonesia are men who have a history of same-sex sexual relations.
“Last year it was still Covid…, maybe the group had not yet met, it was still rare,” said Dr Maxi, in an online press conference, Thursday (26/10/2023).
Typical symptoms of monkey pox
As of October 25 2023, the Ministry of Health found 14 confirmed cases of monkey pox. SAll the patients were men who contracted the monkeypox virus through sexual contact.
They experienced typical symptoms of monkey pox in the form of skin lesions accompanied by fever. However, there are also patients who experience symptoms similar to tonsillitis, namely difficulty swallowing and sore throat.
The following are the symptoms experienced by monkey pox patients in Indonesia according to monitoring by the Ministry of Health:
- lesion
- fever
- swollen lymph nodes
- rash
- muscle ache
- sore throat
- difficult to swallow
- shivering
- genital pain
- fatigue
- cough
- back pain
- nauseous
- sore eyes
- diarrhea
Monkey pox vaccine
To prevent the development of monkey pox, The Ministry of Health has started providing free vaccines to the Indonesian people.
However, due to the limited number of vaccines, currently vaccines are given to priority groups who have a high risk, namely men who have sex with men and people living with HIV/Aids.
Vaccines are also still prioritized to be given to risk groups in Jakarta because according to the number of confirmed cases they are dominated by Jakarta.
