Chinese Astronaut Plants Tomatoes and Scallions in Space Tech – 18 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Chinese astronauts have succeeded in growing a number of vegetables in space. These include tomatoes and leeks which were worked on last August.

Apart from tomatoes and leeks, they also started planting lettuce in June 2023. They managed to plant four batches of lettuce at that time.

This activity was carried out by commander Jing Haipeng and novice astronauts Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao. This success opens up opportunities for it to be applied to a number of space missions.

“This system can be applied to space exploration, including landing missions on the Moon and Mars,” said Yang, quoted from Space, Wednesday (8/11/2023).

He also added that vegetable plants absorb carbon dioxide in the air and produce oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. Plants also succeed in regenerating and purifying water through transpiration.

For information, these three people were members of Shenzhou 16 which returned to Earth on October 31, 2023. They have handed over control of the station to the next mission team Shenzhou 17.

China is known to have a long list of trips to space. One of them is sending a pair of astronauts to the Moon before 2030.

The country plans to build a lunar base. Construction of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) was carried out in the following decade.

China is also aiming for a trip to Mars in the future. Although this plan is still very far away.
