Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Samsung is rumored to be releasing the flagship Galaxy S24 series sooner than usual. Last year, the Galaxy S23 series was unveiled in early February.
According to Korean media reports, the Galaxy S24 series will launch on January 17 2024. Not only the launch schedule, but availability on the market is also being accelerated.
Quoted from AndroidHeadlinesTuesday (21/11/2023), the Galaxy S24 series will immediately open for pre-orders on the planned launch day in San Jose, United States.
After that, the wider public can buy it at various offline and online outlets starting January 30 2024. This schedule is also faster than previous practice.
“We will announce the Galaxy S24 series in San Jose, USA, on January 17 local time,” according to a report by The Elec based on information from Samsung. “Sales will also start immediately,” said the source.
Reports say the accelerated launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24 is a tactic to compete with Apple. Currently, the iPhone 15 does not have any comparable competitors on the market and this is an opportunity to boost sales of the Galaxy S24.
Samsung also chose San Jose as the launch location. This location is the location of Apple’s headquarters.
Samsung expects sales of the Galaxy S24 series to increase by at least 10% from its predecessor. In numbers, the projection is to reach 35 million units a year.
Leaked specifications for Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, Galaxy S24 Ultra
The size of the regular and Plus S24 models is expected to get a slight increase, namely 6.17 inches on the S24 and 6.65 inches on the S24 Plus.
Samsung is expected to retain the 1,080 x 2,340 panel. However, the S24 Plus is rumored to have WQHD resolution, namely 1,440 x 3,120. Meanwhile, the S24 Ultra is expected to get an increased refresh rate, and appears to now be capable of outputting up to 144Hz.
Samsung may also follow in Apple’s footsteps by giving the Galaxy S24 Ultra titanium sides. Titanium is not only harder than aluminum, but will result in a lighter design. The S24 Ultra is expected to weigh 8.21 ounces, compared to 8.25 ounces for the previous model.
In terms of CPU, the Galaxy S24 will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip or equivalent Exynos 2400 chip. Again the chip used may depend on the region the phone is sold in, although it seems likely that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will come with a Qualcomm chip, wherever the market.
Regarding RAM, there are strong rumors that the S24 and S24 Plus will be upgraded from 8GB to 12GB. This news allows the S24 Ultra version to have a capacity of 16 GB.
As for battery capacity, though the S24 and S24 Ultra seem to be the same. But again, the S24 Plus series will likely get an increase of 200mAh, to 4,900mAh.
Even though the S24 Ultra maintains the same capacity, users will get more benefits. Because Samsung will reportedly implement stacked battery technology, which allows for better energy density without increasing its size.
In terms of storage, it looks like the 128GB model will be eliminated. Samsung will apparently start all S24 models with 256GB of internal storage, and will likely increase that to 2TB for the S24 Ultra version.
So far there have only been a few leaks discussing the camera. The Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus won’t get any improvements in terms of photography. It’s a bit disappointing, but it should be noted that the quality of the second camera is not completely bad.
Meanwhile, the Ultra variant will reportedly receive an upgrade next year. The 200MP main sensor and 12MP ultrawide will remain the same, but the South Korean company will apparently introduce a new 50MP telephoto lens.
One report says this series will only have 5x optical zoom, compared to 10x in the previous generation.
Samsung has also provided some interesting video features for the S24 Ultra, which uses a 200MP camera and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The use of AI will allow users to keep an eye on subjects in videos while recording full-angle and cropped images.
Like the previous series, the S24 Ultra will be the only model to come with a bundled S Pen.
But there are two additional features that may be present on some or all phones.
The first is satellite communications. Samsung has confirmed that satellite communications will be coming to Galaxy phones next year, and while the S24 series isn’t mentioned, it’s likely the phones will debut with this feature. If not, it will likely debut in an upcoming foldable phone series.
This is a feature for emergencies when users can’t get a cellular signal and allows sending SMS messages and low-resolution images to get help when out of network.
The second new feature is generative AI, which looks set to be a big breakthrough for Samsung in 2024. The company has shared one example: the ability to translate phone calls in real-time.
It’s unclear whether Samsung sees AI as an exclusive feature on the Ultra variant, or whether all models can use this feature.
However, these various leaks are still rumors. Let’s just wait until the official launch early next year!
