Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The former Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports, Syed Saddiq bin Syed Abdul Rahman, was found guilty of a corruption case of RM1 million or around Rp. 3.3 billion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp. 3,348/RM) and was sentenced by the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
Launching from Bernama News Agency, Syed Saddiq was found guilty of four charges, namely breach of trust, misappropriation of property and two counts of money laundering. For this, Syed Saddiq was sentenced to seven years in prison, two canings and a fine of 10 million ringgit or around IDR 33.4 billion.
Before being caught in a corruption case, Syed Saddiq was admired for his achievements as the youngest minister in Asia and his handsome appearance which attracted many women. He was only 25 years old when he served as Menpora in 2018.

Reporting from the official website of the Malaysian Parliament, the Honorable Tuan Syed Saddiq bin Syed Abdul Rahman is a politician born in Pulai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia, 6 December 1992. The former Menpora is a founding member and president of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) party.
The son of a Singaporean father and an English teacher mother is said to have had political talent since he was a student at Universiti Islam Internasional Malaysia (UIA). His name skyrocketed in neighboring countries when he won the Asian Continent debate event in 2015.
In 2016, Syed Saddiq started his political career as spokesperson (jubir) for the youth wing of Parti Asli Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).
Syed Saddiq reportedly rejected an offer of an educational scholarship from Oxford University amounting to RM400 thousand or around Rp. 1.33 billion in 2016 because he wanted to focus on politics.
Not only that, in 2018 Syed Saddiq also rejected a Chevening scholarship for a Masters in Public Policy at Oxford University. This was revealed through a personal Instagram account (@syedsaddiq).
“I just received an e-mail informing me that I received a scholarship from the Chevening Scholarship to continue my Masters in Public Policy at Oxford University. For those who know me, you will know how long I have wanted to go to Oxford,” said Syed Saddiq.
“For the second time, I was forced to refuse once again because I had been given the trust and mandate by the people of Muar to bring their voice to Parliament so that it would be heard,” he continued, quoted Friday (10/11/2023).

In the 2018 General Election (Pemilu), he participated in political contestation as a candidate for member of the Malaysian parliament in the Muar electoral area, Johor. In this election, Syed Saddiq was elected as a member of the Malaysian Parliament representing the Muar area.
However, before he had time to occupy a seat in Parliament, Syed Saddiq, who was still 25 years old, was elected as Malaysia’s Menpora in July 2018. His position in Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s cabinet made him the youngest minister in Malaysia and Asia.
Syed Saddiq is a Malaysian politician who is quite close to Indonesia. In 2018, Syed Saddiq met President Joko Widodo when he visited Palembang to review preparations for the 2018 Asian Games and make a vlog together.
