Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Brushing teeth is an activity that is often considered trivial by some people, especially at night. A body that is too tired after a day’s activities makes many people lazy to brush their teeth.
Unfortunately, not many people know that brushing your teeth can not only maintain the health and cleanliness of your teeth and mouth, but can also avoid the risk of heart disease.
Quoting from the Huffington Post, a new study found that people who do not brush their teeth before bed are more at risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease or heart and blood vessel disorders.
This research, published in Nature’s Journal Scientific Reports, examined 1,675 patients aged 20 years and over for three years. The study was conducted by scientists who studied patients at Osaka University Hospital in Japan between April 2013 and March 2016 for examination, surgery, or treatment.
The researchers divided the study subjects into four groups, namely people who brushed their teeth twice a day, people who only brushed their teeth in the morning, people who only brushed their teeth at night, and those who didn’t brush their teeth at all.
As a result, patients who only brushed their teeth in the morning and did not brush their teeth at all had worse health conditions than those who brushed their teeth at night.
According to the study, subjects who only brushed their teeth in the morning and did not brush their teeth at all had the worst prognosis when hospitalized for cardiovascular health problems.
Meanwhile, people who brushed their teeth twice a day and those who only brushed their teeth at night had higher survival rates.
The report concluded that bacteria remaining in the mouth is likely to be one of the causes of inflammation throughout the body. This can cause serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease.
“These findings clearly show that just brushing your teeth in the morning after waking up is not enough and brushing your teeth at night is good for maintaining health,” wrote the study, quoted Thursday (9/11/2023).
“In order to prevent cardiovascular disease, brushing your teeth before breakfast is mandatory. However, the most important thing is to brush your teeth before going to bed at night,” continued the study report.
