Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A new history in the aviation fuel industry was created. PT Pertamina (Persero) conducted commercial tests on the use of aviation fuel with a mixture of renewable energy content with the product name Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
“Thank God, another milestone in Indonesia’s journey has been realized. October 27 2023 will be recorded in the history of this Republic, as the first commercial flight in Indonesia using SAF,” explained Oki Muraza, SVP Research & Technology Innovation at Pertamina, quoted on Saturday (28/10/2023).
After going through a series of development stages and testing SAF reliability, on Friday (27/10/2023), Pertamina in synergy with Garuda Indonesia will carry out flight activities from Soekarno – Hatta International Airport to Adi Soemarmo International Airport using Pertamina SAF fuel.
To prepare for the flight, Pertamina filled the SAF through the Soekarno-Hatta Fuel Terminal and Hydrant Installation (SHAFTHI), in Cengkareng, on Thursday (26/10). SAF filling will also be carried out via the Adi Soemarmo Aircraft Filling Depot (DPPU) (Surakarta) before the fleet returns to Soekarno-Hatta this afternoon.
Oki Muraza said, in the effort towards sustainability, there are sectors that are very difficult to carry out the energy transition, these sectors include construction, steel production and aviation. The transition effort in the aviation sector is mainly to produce bioavtur or SAF. “Thank God, with the largest potential for vegetable oil on Planet Earth, Indonesia is now able to produce SAF using the hydrogenation route. Next, we will continue to develop Isomerization so that the quality of SAF is even more excellent,” said Oki Muraza.
As is known, the development of Pertamina SAF is one of Pertamina’s efforts in the energy transition, especially in the aviation business, as well as supporting the achievement of the 2060 Net Zero Emission (NZE) target.
Pertamina SAF is an environmentally friendly fuel, which uses a mixture of palm oil components in the SAF formula so that it can reduce aircraft exhaust emissions. Apart from that, this aspect of utilizing palm oil components can encourage industrial and economic development in the country.
“Pertamina, as a leader in the energy transition, plays a role in building an environmentally friendly ecosystem. By developing green fuel, we are determined to carry out our mandate in energy sovereignty and meet Indonesia’s needs. One of them is with this SAF product, as the future for the aviation industry,” explained Pertamina Main Director Nicke Widyawati, quoted on Saturday (28/10/2023).
Just so you know, Pertamina SAF has also gone through a flight test which was carried out on October 4 2023, SAF has gone through the ground round and flight test stages on a Boeing 737-800 NG commercial aircraft with registration number PK-GFX, belonging to the Garuda Indonesia airline. The flight test was carried out for 60 minutes, crossing the Pelabuhan Ratu air area.
Pertamina SAF is the result of innovation and collaboration between Pertamina subholdings. Through the PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional Green Refinery facility at the Cilacap Refinery, SAF uses the Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) co-processing method, and complies with international standards. Later, SAF will be marketed through PT Pertamina Patra Niaga for the aviation industry in Indonesia and does not rule out the possibility for the international aviation market.
