Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) revealed that people who use groundwater of more than 100 cubic meters per month must have a groundwater drilling permit.
This is stated in the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources number 291.K/GL.01/MEM.G/2023 concerning Standards for Implementing Groundwater Use Approvals.
Plt. Head of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Muhammad Wafid, said that this does not only apply to households, this also applies to group use.
“What requires approval for Ministerial Decree 291 is the fulfillment of basic daily needs if groundwater use is more than 100 m3 per month per head of family. Second, group use with use of more than 100 m3 per month per group,” explained Wafid at the event press conference at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Building, Jakarta, Monday (13/11/2023).
Apart from that, he said that people’s agriculture outside the existing irrigation system also requires permission to use groundwater.
“Then people’s agriculture outside the existing irrigation system, then water tourism for the public. Education and health research by the government,” he added.
Wafid explained that the use of groundwater of 100 m3 or 100,000 liters per month is equivalent to 200 filling water reservoirs which have a capacity of 500 liters or around 5,000 gallons per month assuming a volume of 20 liters per gallon.
However, what is the actual average consumption of groundwater by Indonesian citizens?
Wafid said, “the average use of groundwater in Indonesia is 30 m3 per head of family.”
“A normal household uses an average of 30 m3 of groundwater per month for basic household needs,” said Wafid.
Those who are required to apply for a groundwater drilling permit are households or groups with groundwater use of more than 100 m3 per month. This means that this is three times greater than the average household use of groundwater.
He said that this permit application applies to secondary needs, such as swimming pools.
