Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Elon Musk took aim at several advertising firms and a media monitoring group called ‘Media Matters’, on Friday (17/11) last week. He even threatened to file a nuclear lawsuit against what he called ‘thermonuclear’.
Literally, thermonuclear is a term for a weapon of war. The colloquial term is ‘hydrogen bomb’, namely a weapon that utilizes energy from the main nuclear fission reaction.

Some of the brands in question are Apple, Comcast, Disney, IBM, Lions Gate, Paramount Global, and Warner Bros. discovery. They decided to stop or temporarily suspend advertising spending on social media, which was formerly known as Twitter.
Musk is the owner of X and also serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The loss of income from advertising will certainly have a big impact on the service business.
“X will file a ‘thermonuclear’ lawsuit against Media Matters and all parties who launched attacks on our company,” said Musk, quoted from CNBC International, Monday (20/11/2023).
“Their directors, their donors, and their dark money networks, everyone,” Musk added.
Last week, Media Matters published a report showing that many ads from well-known brands were placed alongside anti-Semitic posts by X users. The report was issued after Musk released tweets that were deemed by the White House to be “anti-Jewish support and hate speech.”
In response, well-known brands temporarily stopped their advertising spending on
“Media Matters completely misrepresents user dynamics on social media,” he said.
“Media Matters created a special X account that deliberately followed sensitive accounts to curate posts, so that ads appeared on accounts with sensitive opinions. Then, Media Matters reported this misinformation to advertisers,” he explained.
Some time ago, the White House also issued a scathing message to Musk. The White House said Musk’s frequent anti-Jewish promotions via social media were against the core values of being a citizen of the United States (US).
