CNBC Insight Learn from Mike Tyson: Wealth IDR 10 T, Retirement Bankrupt Entrepreneur – 3 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – For some people, becoming an athlete is a dream profession. If you excel, then honor and wealth will come in an instant. The higher the level of competition, the greater the profits earned, up to billions of rupiah for one person.

Even so, all of this is ephemeral because it only occurs during the athlete’s productive period. When people get older and less productive, the era of glory that brings in money is over. After that, athletes are forced to retire and live a new life, which is often quite sad.

This series of narratives was experienced entirely by Mike Tyson, a legendary boxer whose life turned upside down when he retired and found himself on the brink of poverty. What’s the story?

Young people live hard, old people have trouble

In an autobiography entitled Iron Ambition (2017), Tyson said that his life as a child was very difficult, both economically, mentally and physically. He oftenbully by his friends just because he is small. In this condition, he was practically unable to fight at all.

Until finally, he was saved by boxing trainer Contantine ‘Cus’ D’Amato. Cus taught the small man the sport of boxing: how to hit and parry an opponent’s blows.

Thanks to these teachings, Tyson began to stand up and have the courage to fight the bullies. Even so, Cus saw that Tyson’s rapid development would be better if he directed it to the professional realm.

Cus then encouraged and taught Tyson to become a boxing athlete until he officially started his professional career on March 6 1985 or at the age of 19. Since then, Tyson began to become an accomplished and brilliant boxing athlete.

Even though his body is small, he successfully beats his opponents using deadly techniques. On this basis, the audience is always waiting for the match.

Throughout his career, Tyson has collected 16 world champions. One of these 16 was obtained at the age of 20 which made him break the record as the youngest boxing competition champion in the world. Until now, this record has not been broken.

Not only that, in various boxing matches of various classes, Tyson always lifted the winning belt. In total, he achieved 27 wins without losing once.

Ultimately, success brings wealth. Quote InsiderIn his golden years, he could earn US$ 30 million or around Rp. 400 billion per match. With that amount, in just 2-3 matches, Tyson has become a trillionaire.

This does not take into account the profits if you win the match or get money from sponsors or advertising. Of course, all this allows Tyson to wallow in wealth. New York Times said that during his heyday in the 1980-1990s he had assets of US$ 400 million or the equivalent of US$ 700 million (Rp. 10 trillion) today.

Unfortunately, all these assets were not used properly.

With that much money, he bought lots of luxury cars and houses. Insider said he had bought a house for US$ 4 million or Rp. 62 billion in Nevada and California. He was also caught buying an 80 carat necklace worth US$ 173 thousand.

In short, Tyson often wastes money. He buys things that are not really needed because he just wants to live a luxurious life.

Lose and Bankrupt

Wealth ultimately blinded Tyson’s professional life. When he was rich and had a lot of money, he was lazy about training and preferred to go on a spree. He forgets that everyone has their time.

As a result, he always loses when competing. While he was blinded by his wealth and experienced a phase of decline, Tyson repeatedly ended up behind bars, one of which was a case of rape.

As a result, his criminal record has become a consideration for many brands seeking collaboration. Since then, Tyson’s income has begun to decrease. Moreover, after repeatedly losing, his income stream began to shrink.

Even so, Tyson still does not eliminate the nature of consumerism. He still lives in luxury. Practically, the income obtained clearly cannot keep up.

All these events made Tyson declare bankruptcy in 2003. He no longer had any money and was forced to live with debt bondage.

Tyson retired in 2005 after experiencing repeated defeats. When he retired, Tyson had absolutely no assets and had to raise money again from scratch.

Luckily, after almost 20 years post-retirement, Tyson’s life is starting to improve. Quote Insiderthis man born in 1966 is reported to have become a billionaire again after being successful as an actor in various films.
